Initiated in 2017, the NAVISP programme has been operational for almost nine years. In that time, it has become a key enabler for innovation and competitiveness in the Positioning, Navigation and Timing (PNT) domain, with more than 300 activities funded with European and Canadian industry and academia in all sectors of the PNT value chain, from upstream to downstream.
NAVISP is implemented through three programmatic elements: Element 1 supporting PNT innovation, Element 2 supporting industrial PNT competitiveness, and Element 3 supporting national and institutional PNT activities.
Technologies, products and services in the field of PNT are deeply embedded in the functioning of modern society. From time-stamping of banking transactions worldwide to landing aircraft, PNT permeates many aspects of life. Satellite navigation is the most successful PNT technology today, but other complementary technologies, such as inertial navigation systems, help to achieve the performance required from its application.
As part of the NAVISP programme core team, reporting to the NAVISP Element 1 Manager, you will define, implement and monitor innovative activities in the field of navigation systems, technologies, algorithms and techniques in cooperation with European industry, universities and research centres and institutional stakeholders, drawing on the expertise of other ESA directorates.

A master’s degree in aerospace engineering or another relevant domain is required for this post.

In principle, recruitment will be within the advertised grade band (A2-A4). However, if the selected candidate has less than four years of relevant professional experience following the completion of the master’s degree, the position may be filled at A1 level.
Applicants must be eligible to access information, technology, and hardware which is subject to European or US export control and sanctions regulations & eligible to acquire the security clearance by their national security administrations.
During the recruitment process, the Agency may request applicants to undergo selection tests. Additionally, successful candidates will need to undergo basic screening before appointment, which will be conducted by an external background screening service, in compliance with the European Space Agency's security procedures.
Note that ESA is in the process of transitioning to a Matrix setup, which could lead to organisational changes affecting this position.
