Mission and objectives
UNICRI (United Nations Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute) is a specialized UN entity established in 1968. Its mission is to assist intergovernmental, governmental, and non-governmental organizations in improving crime prevention and criminal justice policies in support of peace and development. UNICRI emphasizes action-oriented analysis and integrated technical assistance, with current priorities including justice reform, emerging crimes, and security governance.Context
The Online Volunteer will support UNICRI’s communication and outreach activities across its thematic areas on crime prevention, justice, human rights protection and security, including initiatives addressing cybersecurity, organized crime, violent extremism, prison reform, artificial intelligence, environmental crimes, and emerging threats. Working in close coordination with UNICRI Public Information Officer and Graphic Designer, the Online Volunteer will contribute to the professional design and production of institutional publications and multimedia communication materials. The assignment will support multiple thematic areas and projects, ensuring visual coherence, consistency and alignment with UNICRI’s branding and editorial standards. The role requires strong editorial design skills combined with the ability to contribute to the development of short video and multimedia products that translate complex research and policy content into accessible formats.Task Description
Editorial design and publication layout • Design and format research reports, policy briefs, technical papers and other institutional publications (including medium- to long-form documents), as well as articles and thematic layouts for UNICRI’s magazine Freedom From Fear. • Develop and apply structured grids, typographic hierarchies, paragraph styles and master templates. • Ensure consistency across publications and alignment with institutional visual identity. • Prepare professional print-ready and digital files in accordance with publishing standards. • Development of outreach and institutional materials • Design flyers, brochures, banners, roll-ups and conference materials. • Create branded templates for recurring communication products. • Develop infographics and data visualisations derived from research findings. Video and multimedia production • Support the development of short institutional videos and thematic video products. • Create storyboards and visual concepts for research dissemination. • Produce and edit short videos for digital dissemination (e.g. social media, website). • Design motion graphics elements such as title cards, animated infographics, lower thirds and visual frames.Competencies and values
