Organizational context/Background Information
UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, launched Private Sector Partnerships (PSP) activities in Malaysia in 2017 with the aim to secure financial contributions from individual donors, corporations, and foundations. The development of this market was taken to broaden the organization’s supporter base and establish a sustainable source of income from the private sector within Malaysia. Ultimately, this will enable UNHCR to offer even greater support to refugees and other persons of concern, currently benefiting over 180,000 refugees in Malaysia.
As of 2022, UNHCR Malaysia has garnered the support of over 50,000 individual donors, a significant majority of whom contribute on a monthly basis. The Donor Recruitment program involves engaging in face-to-face fundraising efforts that compellingly present UNHCR's mission to the public and seek financial support from individual donors to support UNHCR programs across Malaysia and globally. In response to the growing number of supporters, PSP Malaysia also introduced a Donor Loyalty programme in 2020, focusing on fostering strong donor relations, cultivating loyalty, and supporting the donor development program.
The position
This position will take up duties arises from digital donor recruitment and digital communication activities. The incumbent's role, in relation to this requirement, is to support the expansion of UNHCR PSP programme in Malaysia, making use of all possible opportunities that may arise through various fundraising activities.
Duties and responsibilities
• Assist in reviewing, digitizing, scheduling and adapting web content from UNHCR local and global perspectives to enrich the content and interactions of emails, web sites, mobile and social media platforms (organic and paid) i.e. Facebook, Instagram, YouTube and etc., which target donors and prospects, in order to leverage the awareness, engagement, and optimize donation performance to meet with the programs’ objectives;
• Assist in analyze and provide user journeys, mobile and social media insights, and to optimize the engagement and conversion performance and then execute the implementation to increase the acquisition and engagement programmes;
• Assist in producing, consolidate and coordinate all digital assets between UNHCR offices and external to ensure programs' execution efficiency and effectiveness in order to meet the campaigns objectives;
• Assist in agencies determining the promotional tactic to increase web traffic and engagement that meet the programs’ objectives and conversions;
Minimum qualifications required
In order to be considered for an internship, candidates must meet the following eligibility criteria:
• Be either a recent graduate (having completed their studies within two years of applying) or a current student in a graduate/undergraduate school programme from a university or higher education facility accredited by IAU/UNESCO; and
• Have completed at least two years of undergraduate studies in a field relevant or of interest to the work of UNHCR.
Desirable qualifications and skills
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office 360 (Excel, Words, PowerPoint and Outlook).
• Familiar with digital and social media management.
• Experience in photo/video editing using Canva, Capcut or Adobe Creative Suite.
Conditions
The internship is for three months with the start date expected to be in March 2026. It is a full-time role with working hours starting from 9:00am to 5:00pm, Monday to Friday (40 hours per week).
NOTE: An individual whose father, mother, son, daughter, brother or sister is a staff member of UNHCR, including a Temporary Appointment holder or a member of the Affiliate Workforce, is not eligible for an internship.
Allowance: Interns who do not receive financial support from an outside party will receive a monthly allowance of MYR 2,228.74 to partially help to cover the cost of food, local transportation and living expenses.
Location: This internship is to be based in the UNHCR Malaysia Office in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
Visas and Residencies: As the given duty station is Kuala Lumpur, applicants should be able to demonstrate permission to reside and legally work in the Malaysia at the point of application for duration of the internship. Obtaining and renewing current visas and residence permits including all associated costs, are the primary responsibility of the intern. UNHCR may assist by providing supporting documentation if needed.
Insurance: Interns are fully responsible for arranging medical insurance covering the full internship. A copy of proof of valid medical insurance covering the period of the Internship Agreement is required by UNHCR.
