On 29 May 1948, the United Nations Security Council, in its resolution 50 (1948) called for a cessation of hostilities in Palestine and established the first peacekeeping mission headed by a UN Mediator with the assistance of a group of military observers to be known as the United Nations Truce Supervision Organization (UNTSO). UNTSO is mandated to observe and maintain the unconditional ceasefires and assist the parties to the 1949 Armistice Agreements in the supervision of the application and observance of the terms of those Agreements. UNTSO's mandate covers five countries, including Egypt, Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, and the Syrian Arab Republic. This position is located in UNTSO, duty station Naqoura, Lebanon to support UNTSO mandated activities. The Information Analyst reports directly to the Senior Advisor.
Responsibilities
Within the limits of delegated authority, the P-3 Information Analyst, Political Affairs, will be responsible for, but not limited to, the performance of the following duties: • Support the Senior Adviser in maintaining in-depth understanding of the political and security developments and linkages in the mission area; conduct mid-to-long term trend analysis; • Support mission planning in relation to UNTSO’s mandated activities in Lebanon through integrated analysis and collaborative assessments with other UNTSO components for improved mission decision-making. • Support the activities of the Senior Advisor in line with Head of Mission strategic vision and guidance with regard to regional strategic engagement and the regional liaison function. Collate, evaluate and provide short- or long- term analyses on developments/events affecting the implementation of regional peacekeeping and political mission mandates. • In support of the regional liaison function and the Analysis Team, provide a coherent analytical and reporting capacity, and support the collection, coordination, analysis and dissemination of information in order to inform senior mission leadership decision making and ensuring regional political / security situational awareness, including undertaking integrated assessments of key political and security developments and trends and provides integrated assessments. • Ensure regional political situational awareness through accurate and timely reports, analyses, and briefings for senior leadership decision-making, policy development, and planning. • Provide analytical coverage of political and social economic developmental aspects in a volatile environment. Prepare, edit and disseminate information in the form of regular reports, specific papers, incident reports, threat assessments, briefs, incident/trend analysis, and scenario papers. • Support the Senior Adviser in briefing the Mission Leadership Team, senior UN staff and visiting delegations and preparation of relevant events; including drafting talking points and speeches for the Head of Mission and follow-up, as appropriate. Contribute to the formulation and implementation of the Analysis Team's program of work and support planning and budgetary processes. • Foster effective working relationships with other UNTSO components, regional peacekeeping / political missions, and relevant external actors and organizations. • Perform other duties as required, in support of the Senior Advisor, Analysis Team and Mission.

Education
Advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in political science, social sciences, international relations, law, public administration, economics or related field. A first level university degree with a relevant combination of academic qualifications and experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
Job - Specific Qualification
- Knowledge of south Lebanon and United Nations Middle East peacekeeping missions is desirable .
Work Experience
A minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in political or international affairs work, political, information analysis, political journalism, development, security (military operations, diplomacy, humanitarian affairs, human rights, or related field is required. Experience briefing senior officials on complex or multidimensional issues is desirable. Experience as part of a political reporting unit, Joint Mission Analysis Center or similar analysis capacity is desirable. Experience in data analytics, responsible data management or related area in support of data-based decision making is desirable. At least two years of work experience in or on the Middle East is desirable.
