Position Overview

The Ambulance Driver is responsible for safely operating PIH Sierra Leone ambulances to support emergency medical transport services within assigned locations. The role ensures timely, safe, and efficient transport of patients, clinical staff, and medical supplies while maintaining high standards of professionalism, adherence to safety protocols, and respect for patient dignity. The Ambulance Driver contributes directly to PIH’s mission to provide high-quality care to the most vulnerable populations.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

. Patient Transport & Emergency Response

  • Safely drive ambulances to transport patients to and from health facilities, referral hospitals, and community locations.
  • Respond promptly to emergency calls and follow established PIH emergency response protocols.
  • Assist clinical staff in lifting, moving, and positioning patients onto stretchers as required.
  • Ensure the comfort, dignity, and privacy of all patients during transport.
  • Keep communication open with facility teams during transfers and notify supervisors of delays, breakdowns, or emergency incidents.

2. Vehicle Operation & Safety

  • Follow all traffic laws, PIH driving standards, and speed limits at all times.
  • Conduct daily pre- and post-trip inspections of the ambulance to ensure it is in optimal operating condition.
  • Report mechanical issues immediately to the Fleet Supervisor and ensure the ambulance is serviced as scheduled.
  • Drive responsibly on difficult terrains and during adverse weather conditions.
  • Ensure the ambulance is always stocked with essential safety items (e.g., fire extinguisher, spare tyres, tools, reflective gear).

3. Ambulance Cleanliness & Preparedness

  • Maintain high standards of cleanliness of both the interior and exterior of the ambulance.
  • Ensure that stretchers, oxygen cylinders, and medical equipment are secured and ready before each deployment.
  • Work with clinical staff to ensure timely restocking of medical supplies after each transfer.
  • Support infection prevention and control protocols, including cleaning and disinfecting the vehicle after each patient transport.

4. Documentation & Recordkeeping

  • Complete trip sheets, logbooks, fuel usage forms, and patient transfer forms accurately and on time.
  • Ensure proper sign-off at sending and receiving facilities during patient transfers.
  • Submit reports on incidents, accidents, or near-misses in line with PIH policies.
  • Track mileage, maintenance needs, and fuel consumption according to Fleet guidelines.

5. Compliance & Professional Conduct

  • Adhere to PIH-SL's Safeguarding, PSEAH, and Child Protection policies at all times.
  • Maintain confidentiality of patient information and demonstrate respect in all interactions.
  • Uphold PIH values of service, solidarity, integrity, and teamwork.
  • Ensure zero involvement in corruption, misuse of PIH assets, or inappropriate use of ambulances.
  • Report any safeguarding concerns immediately through the appropriate channels

Education and Work Experience Requirements:

Required Qualifications & Experience

  • Valid Sierra Leone driver’s license (Class C or appropriate category for ambulance operation).
  • Minimum of 3 years professional driving experience, preferably in emergency transport or healthcare settings.
  • Experience working with INGOs, medical facilities, or humanitarian organizations is an added advantage.
  • Good understanding of vehicle maintenance and basic mechanical troubleshooting.
  • Basic literacy and numeracy skills for completing forms and logbooks( BECE)
