Job Description

Context

Under the overall supervision of the Regional Director and direct supervision of the Senior Regional Media and Communications Officer; and in close collaboration with the GlobalCommunications Team and the Regional Coordination Unit and country level communication focal points of the Migrant Protection, Return, and Reintegration Programme -North Africa (MPRR-NA) , the Media and Communications Associate will support the communication and visibility activities for the MPRR-NA. This multi-year initiative, funded by the European Union (EU) and supported by the governments of Denmark, Norway, Italy and Sweden, provides protection assistance and return and reintegration services to migrants, while also enhancing the return and reintegration capacities of partner countries. The incumbent will be responsible and accountable for the following:

  1. Assist in the implementation of communications activities by collecting and organizing materials needed for outreach and visibility efforts under the MPRR.
  2. Assist in gathering and disseminating public information on MPRR activities, consolidating inputs from Country Offices for coherent and consistent messaging.
  3. Draft and edit basic public information materials for IOM press briefing notes, human-interest stories, regular newsletters, website and social media highlighting results of the MPRR results and using gender- and protection-sensitive language.
  4. Follow up with country offices on the use of existing MPRR communication tools and materials to support coherence and visibility across the programme.
  5. Prepare editable templates (e.g., PowerPoint, fact sheets, briefing notes, reports) for programme use to promote consistency and efficiency.
  6. Maintain a regional repository of MPRR communication materials (stories, photos, videos, visuals, lessons learned, good practices) for internal and external use.
  7. Provide logistical assistance for communication activities linked to MPRR regional workshops, donor visibility actions, and outreach events.
  8. Provide logistical assistance for promoting IOM global and UN-led campaigns within the programme, including coordination with United Nations and other interlocutors, in the context of the programme.
  9. Maintain regular contact with Country Office staff to collect content (stories, photos, videos, data visualizations) that highlight IOM’s work under the MPRR.
  10. Maintain regular liaison with HQ and relevant IOM Regional and Global Offices to share MPRR communication materials and align them with global messaging and donor visibility requirements.
  11. Disseminate communication materials and resources for communities, including in protection-sensitive contexts, and check that they remain accessible and aligned with IOM and donor standards. 
  12. Assist with the publication and distribution of media content on the regional website and other IOM media channels and social media platforms.
  13. Assist in preparing communications products such as infographics, dashboards, and multimedia content, and provide inputs for donor reports and proposals, including visuals, and short narratives updates.
  14. Maintain contact with international and local media, as well as with media focal points in governmental and non-governmental partner agencies.
  15. Provide logistical support for staff training sessions on communications practices, both virtually and in person.
  16. Provide support in collecting and sharing media updates on migration, return, and protection topics, when requested.
  17. Perform other duties as required.
Education
  • High school diploma with five years of relevant professional experience; or,
  • Bachelor’s degree in Media and Communications, Public Information, Journalism, or a related field from an accredited academic institution with three years of relevant professional experience.
Accredited Universities are those listed in the UNESCO World Higher Education Database.
 
Experience
  • Experience providing support in public information, media, or communications activities in a UN organization, NGO, or similar institution.
  • Experience working with or supporting a news media outlet, communication office, or content production team.
Skills
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Basic knowledge of graphic design, photography, video, web, and social media tools.
  • Basic understanding of migration-related issues in the Region is an advantage.
  • Ability to collect, organize, and prepare information and materials for communication products.
  • Ability to follow instructions and meet deadlines.
  • Attention to detail and good organizational skills.
Languages
  • For this position, fluency in English and Arabic is required (oral and written). 
  • Working knowledge of French is an advantage.
IOM’s official languages are English, French and Spanish.
Proficiency of language(s) required will be specifically evaluated during the selection process, which may include written and/or oral assessments.
