The icddr,b Genome Centre serves as a hub for advanced genomic research and capacity building in Bangladesh. Equipped with state-of-the-art technology, its core mission is to conduct high-throughput genomic sequencing and bioinformatic analysis to tackle pressing public health challenges. The Centre focuses on the genomic surveillance of infectious diseases, tracking pathogens such as SARS-CoV-2, cholera, dengue, and antimicrobial-resistant bacteria. The Centre conducts comprehensive genomic analyses, including metagenomics of clinical and environmental samples, and human genomics services encompassing cancer diagnostics, epigenetics, and transcriptomics.
Position Description:
The Senior Research Investigator will report to the Senior Scientist and will be mainly responsible for enhancing team capacity to conduct population-based research and coordinating research studies in collaboration with government and non-governmental, national and international partners within the guidelines of the research protocol and organizational values. The specific areas of responsibility include:
- Develop and implement innovative research proposals and protocols applying ML/AI methodologies;
- Conduct rigorous data analyses, model development, and validation using advanced computational approaches;
- Prepare comprehensive research reports and peer-reviewed manuscripts, and participate in scientific reviews to uphold publication standards;
- Design detailed project plans, defining milestones, deliverables, and success metrics for ML/AI-driven studies;
- Evaluate financial and technical resource requirements to ensure efficient project execution and sustainability;
- Identify and apply for national and international funding opportunities that support AI and computational research;
- Mentor and train junior researchers and students in ML/AI techniques, mathematical/statistical modelling, experimental design, and scientific writing;
- Provide guidance on safe laboratory and data-handling practices, ensuring compliance with data governance, ethical standards, and biosafety regulations;
- Supervise research staff in data collection, model deployment, and field implementation activities;
- Develop and implement Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), algorithms, and analytical pipelines for research projects;
- Oversee the integration of computational models with experimental or field data for enhanced scientific outcomes;
- Engage with interdisciplinary teams to advance the integration of AI technologies across research domains;
- Conduct critical peer reviews of scientific manuscripts to support publication efforts.
- Perform rigorous data analysis, identify knowledge gaps, and derive meaningful, evidence-based conclusions.
- Assess financial and non-financial resource requirements aligned with project methodologies and institutional priorities.
- Identify and apply for funding opportunities from national and international grant agencies.
- Facilitate Institutional Review Board (IRB) submissions and approvals for human-subject research.
- Organize and lead workshops, seminars, and collaborative initiatives in ML/AI applications in scientific research.
- Present research findings at national and international conferences to disseminate scientific knowledge and foster collaborations.
Required Qualifications and Experience:
- PhD (or equivalent) in Computer Science/Data Science/Computational Biology/Bioinformatics/Mathematics/Physics or in a relevant discipline.
- At least 8 years of professional experience in relevant fields, showcasing subject matter expertise, advanced research capabilities and practical knowledge with publications;
- Proven research experience in machine learning, deep learning, or artificial intelligence;
- Experience in managing or leading research projects and team supervision;
- Proficiency in Python, R, TensorFlow, PyTorch, Mathematica, or similar ML/AI frameworks;
- Strong interpersonal and excellent communication and writing skills in English and Bangla.

Contract Type and Duration:
- Short-Term Contractual Service Agreement; duration will be 6 months with a possibility of extension subject to availability of funds and performance.

Salary & benefits:
- Tk.165,233/-per month (consolidated) inclusive of house rent and conveyance allowances;
