Job Description

BACKGROUND

The IRC’s Resettlement, Asylum and Integration (RAI) department creates opportunities for refugees and other vulnerable migrants to gain stability and control of their future. RAI serves more than 50,000 individuals each year, through a diverse portfolio of programs aimed at five core outcomes: Health, Safety, Economic Wellbeing, Education and Power. RAI Education & Youth programs support forcibly displaced children to make a positive adjustment to their new communities, pursue their educational goals, and develop the social emotional assets to support holistic well-being.

SCOPE OF WORK

The Education, Youth & Curricula Advisor will increase the reach and impact of the Youth & Education team in Silver Spring. They will develop relationships with local public school leaders, educators, youth service organizations, direct service staff members and potential funders, with the objective of elevating and sustaining education supports accessed by humanitarian immigrant youth and the communities where they live, work and attend school.

IRC youth and education programs work with forcibly displaced youth, filling a gap for newcomer language learners, survivors of trauma, students with limited and/or interrupted formal education and other immigrant students. Existing youth and education services in Silver Spring include youth casework, school enrollment support, family orientation to the public school system, after school programming, weekend and summer programming, high school mentoring, out of school youth mentoring, early childhood supports and older youth career pathways connections. This position will provide technical and strategic support as the team aims to enhance these programs and expand the reach and collaboration of programs within local communities.

The Youth, Education and Curricula Advisor will support development of curricula for both formal educators and supporters of youth; introduce IRC Healing Classrooms resources and other trauma-informed curricula to public school leaders and educators; assess select existing programs and make strategic suggestions for improvements; increase evidence-informed tutor training and tutoring in local schools; expand connections with youth career services or early childhood opportunities to support humanitarian immigrant youth and their communities; expand relationships with funders to sustain and advance youth & education programming in Maryland.

The Education, Youth & Curricula Advisor will draw from their subject matter expertise as well as strong project design, coordination and collaboration skills to develop relationships, coordinate activities, engage stakeholders and increase the quality and reach of IRC programs.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

Technical Support

  • In collaboration with the Silver Spring Youth & Education team, deputy director and technical unit, determine priorities for technical tools and program guidance to support high quality practices and expand program opportunities
  • Deliver targeted training and technical assistance
  • Research, draft, and review content for existing curricula, training modules and youth program activities
  • Support current program inquiries related to tutoring direct instruction, curriculum and assessment
  • Conduct desk research related to trends in the field of education for immigrant and forcibly displaced youth to inform local activities

External Relations

  • Identify key actors in the success of refugee education
  • Complete desk research to determine likely collaboration areas
  • Schedule meetings and explore opportunities for IRC to support schools and youth service providers in communities with sizable humanitarian immigrant youth populations
  • Represent IRC at external functions, primarily with education providers and youth service organizations
  • Engage local education and youth team and HQ technical unit to ensure programming and follow-through on new possibilities

Training and Capacity Development

  • Train service providers on key topics, as identified to meet their needs. Potential training areas include Healing Classrooms, working with humanitarian immigrant youth, basic adult or youth education principals and more
  • Plan and coordinate in-person trainings/workshops and online learning events. Conduct pieces of training. Coordinate scheduling, speakers/facilitators, logistics, procurement, and communications

Program Sustainability

  • Develop content to pitch IRC’s youth & education program to external funders
  • In collaboration with development team, youth team and deputy director, identify potential funders, schedule meetings and develop high quality, evidence based and fundable pitches and proposals

Office Activities

  • Participation in regular organization, unit, and team meetings and trainings
  • Contribute to internal communication and coordination efforts around organizational priorities (e.g. measurement, evidence-generation, inclusive programming, etc.)
  • Complete administrative and other office functions by deadlines
  • Other duties as assigned

KEY WORKING RELATIONSHIPS

Position reports to: Deputy Director, Programs.

Collaboration with: Youth & Education Supervisor, program coordinators, program manager, HQ technical unit, direct service staff.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

  • Minimum 10 years’ experience in education setting, including
    • Tutoring, teaching, and curriculum development for immigrants, English Language Learners and youth
    • Coaching and/or training school-based and non-school-based educators
  • Bachelor’s degree preferred. Master’s degree in Education or a closely related area preferred.
  • In-depth knowledge of theory and evidence-based practices in teaching and supporting immigrant youth, language learners, curriculum development, and adult learning/educator training
  • Excellent in-person and virtual workshop/training coordination skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, ability to be clear and concise
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills; proven ability to prioritize and deliver on time
  • Proven experience conducting outreach, building relationships and maintaining strategic partners
  • Highly proficient in Microsoft Office suite and command of databases and platforms.
  • Fluent in written and spoken English

WORKING ENVIRONMENT:

  • Standard office working environment, onsite 4 days/week
  • Local travel. Access to an insured vehicle required
  • Some schedule flexibility, to accommodate for various program and partner meeting times

Compensation: (Pay Range: $68k - $70k) Posted pay ranges apply to US-based candidates. Ranges are based on various factors including the labor market, job type, internal equity, and budget. Exact offers are calibrated by work location, individual candidate experience and skills relative to the defined job requirements.
