Overview:

UNITAR is an autonomous body within the United Nations that was established in 1965 pursuant to a UN General Assembly resolution. UNITAR’s mission is to develop the individual, institutional and organisational capacities of countries and other United Nations stakeholders through high quality learning solutions and related knowledge products and services to enhance decision-making and to support country-level action for overcoming global challenges.

UNITAR Division for Peace groups together all programming in the fields of conflict prevention, peace-making, peacekeeping and peacebuilding to provide the most comprehensive support to the promotion of peace, justice and strong institutions worldwide, thereby essentially advancing the implementation of Sustainable Development Goal 16. In the view of promoting democratic governance and human rights, the Division focuses on offering innovative capacity-building and knowledge-management solutions for a broad range personnel (including uniformed personnel, representatives of regional and international organizations, United Nations staff, women peacemakers, minority and indigenous peoples’ representatives) working towards sustaining peace, while ensuring that these activities meet the specific needs of conflict-affected and post-conflict countries.

General objectives of the contract:

The trainee shall work closely with the Pre-deployment Training and Advisory (PDTA) team to support a range of training and quality assurance tasks related to the development and implementation of the PDTA’s projects. This role offers hands-on experience in training organisation, project management and the development and implementation of quality assurance tools to facilitate the work of the Section.

Responsibilities/Description of Professional Services:
  • Assist with the development and implementation of Quality Assurance tools and processes;
  • Contribute to development and formatting of PDTA course packages;
  • Support the planning, organisation and evaluation of training projects;
  • Assist with the creation of course contents including presentations, activities and exercises;
  • Develop and analyse data from questionnaires and surveys for training courses and other projects;
  • Support implementation of projects carried out in partnership with the United Nations Police (UNPOL);
  • Help collect and organise data for project reports, including for partners and the Evaluation Management System (EMS);
  • Compiling lessons from training events;
  • Assist with the day-to-day operational requirements of the project, ensuring all tasks are completed in a timely and efficient manner;
  • Perform any other duties as requested by the supervisor, demonstrating flexibility and responsiveness to the project’s evolving needs.
Measurable outputs / deliverables / schedule of deliverables:

By the end of the traineeship, the incumbent will be able to:

  • Develop the ability to create, maintain, and update project schedules, ensuring timely completion of organizational tasks;
  • Gain skills in the development of comprehensive training packages and material;
  • Develop skills on organizational planning and management;
  • Gain experience working with key UN actors and partners in peace operations;
  • Enhance organizational skills by supporting the planning and execution of in-person trainings, including planning and managing logistics effectively, managing participant, trainer and partner requests and ensuring seamless execution;
  • Improve operational skills by actively engaging in project management tasks and day-to-day project operations to support project goals efficiently;
  • Develop expertise in drafting written outputs, such as donor reports and project updates, with an emphasis on clarity and alignment with project objectives;
  • Strengthen research skills by conducting in-depth research on topics such as peacekeeping, gender equality, and project-related themes, to inform decision-making and project development;
  • Work independently and take initiative while adapting to evolving priorities.
Performance Indicators for Evaluation of Results:

Timely and quality submission of the deliverables; activities implemented with a high degree of effectiveness and efficiency, demonstrating a high degree of professionalism of the Trainee and contributing to an increase in the professional image of the Institute.

Reporting structure:

The Trainee reports to Claudia Croci, Chief, Pre-deployment Training and Advisory Section, Division for Peace.
