Duties and Responsibilities
Created in December 1999, the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) is the designated focal point in the United Nations system for the coordination of efforts to reduce disasters and to ensure synergies among the disaster reduction activities of the United Nations and regional organizations and activities in both developed and less developed countries. Led by the United Nations Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Disaster Risk Reduction (SRSG), UNDRR has over 140 staff located in its headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland, and in regional offices. Specifically, UNDRR guides, monitors, analyses and reports on progress in the implementation of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030, supports regional and national implementation of the Framework and catalyzes action and increases global awareness to reduce disaster risk working with UN Member States and a broad range of partners and stakeholders, including civil society, the private sector, parliamentarians and the science and technology community. This internship is located in the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR), Regional Office for the Arab States (ROAS) in Cairo, Egypt. The internship is unpaid, full-time, and in -person. Interns work five days per week. The intern will work under the supervision of the External Relations Officer. The intern will support the team in advancing the organization’s strategic communications efforts, contribute to global campaigns aimed at promoting disaster risk reduction. Tasks will include: Social Media Support: o Assist in developing and scheduling engaging content for social media platforms o Monitor social media trends, engagement metrics, and provide input for content improvement. o Support coverage of events, workshops, and campaigns. o Monitor media coverage and prepare summaries or media digests relevant to the office’s work. Website and Digital Content Management: o Support regular updates to the office’s website pages, including uploading news items, event summaries, and multimedia content. o Assist in ensuring that website content is accurate, timely, and aligned with corporate messaging. Newsletter Development: o Contribute to the drafting, formatting, and dissemination of regular newsletters. o Coordinate with various teams to collect relevant content, stories, and visuals for inclusion. Content Development: o Assist in drafting communication materials such as press releases, feature stories, talking points, and briefs. o Support the development of visual assets in collaboration with graphic designers or using available tools. Administrative and Coordination Support: o Assist in internal coordination for communications tasks and support documentation of communication efforts. o Perform other related duties as may be assigned by the supervisor.
Qualifications/special skills
Applicants must meet one of the following requirements: (a) be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor's degree or equivalent). • Applicants must have good knowledge of standard software applications, especially MS Word, MS PowerPoint, and MS Teams; • Ability to draft news articles and/or social media posts is required; • Ability to design surveys and polls is desired; • Using content management systems (CMS), photo editing software, web analytics, accessibility is desired; • Knowledge in copywriting, editing, and translating web content from English to Arabic is desired
Languages
• English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this internship, fluency in spoken and written Arabic and English is required. Knowledge of an additional official UN language is an advantage. The official languages of the United Nations Secretariat are Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish.

1. Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience. However, a field of study that is closely related to the type of internship that you are applying for is required such as Marketing, Business Administration, public information, digital communications, social media, web content managementor any other related field. 2. Applicants must be a student in the final year of the first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), Master's or Ph.D. Programme or equivalent, or have completed a Bachelor's, Master's or PH.D.
