Duties and Responsibilities
Duties and Responsibilities The Archives and Records Management Section (ARMS) in the Department of Operational Support (DOS) identifies, preserves, and provides access to records that document the history of the UN. ARMS is responsible for all aspects of recordkeeping within the United Nations Secretariat, ranging from measures to ensure that UN officials create records in the course of their duties, through the management of records in UN offices, to preserving and making records of continuing value accessible as archives. The Department of Operational Support (DOS) provides end-to-end operational support, advisory services and other solutions to the operating entities across the Secretariat, including other departments, offices-away-from-headquarters, field missions, and regional commissions. The internship in the United Nations Archives and Records Management Section (ARMS) of the Facilities and Commercial Activities Service (FCAS) in the Division of Administration (DOA) in the Department of Operational Support is for three (3) months. ARMS is the archival repository of the UN Secretariat based in UN Headquarters in New York where we operate a public research facility and provide advisory services to UN offices, missions, and staff around the world. To support the research community, we strive to make as many of our archives available online as possible so users can access them anywhere in the world. Likewise, to support our colleagues at multiple duty stations and in field operations across the globe, we provide remote and onsite training and advisory services. Office Duties: - Survey, process, and describe archival records - Assists with internal and external reference requests - Improves metadata descriptions - Conducts historical research - Assists in ARMS’ digitization programme - Perform other related duties as required
Qualifications/special skills
Please note that to qualify for an internship with the United Nations Internship Programme, applicants must meet the following requirements: (1) be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); or (2) be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor's degree or equivalent); or (3) have graduated with a university degree as defined in (1) and (2) above. We seek candidates currently enrolled in an archive or library programme. No working experience is required to apply for the United Nations Internship Programme. Your training, education, advance course work or skills should benefit the United Nations during your internship. Have you completed a UN internship before? If yes, please include the UN entity as well as assignment dates. COMPETENCIES required to undertake the internship. - Communication - Teamwork - Planning & Organizing
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is an advantage.
Additional Information
Visa and Work Authorization Mandatory Requirements: For internships in the United States of America, persons who are not United States citizens, permanent residents or on another non-immigrant (such as F1 or J1 visa) status, will be required to obtain a G4 visa. The selected person will be responsible for ensuring that they have a valid visa, and approved employment authorization (CPT/OPT/AT), allowing them to undertake the internship.
