Duties and Responsibilities
Background This is an unpaid internship opportunity at the United Nations Resident Coordinator’s Office (RCO) in Kyrgyzstan. The RCO provides strategic coordination and support to the UN Country Team (UNCT) to ensure a coherent, effective, and impactful UN presence. The RCO leads on communications, advocacy, partnerships, and reporting, ensuring alignment with the Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework (UNSDCF) and the UN’s global priorities. The Communications Intern will support the RCO’s communications and advocacy efforts, with opportunities to gain practical experience in multimedia content creation, media monitoring, and visibility of UN activities in Kyrgyzstan. • Provide logistical and functional support during press conferences, workshops, and high-level UN events. • Assist in drafting, translating and editing communication products (press releases, social media posts). • Support the development of multimedia content (photography, videography, editing, design of digital/print materials). • Contribute to UN communication campaigns and visibility activities. • Support media monitoring by compiling daily/weekly coverage of UN activities in national and regional media. • Assist with translations between English, Russian, and Kyrgyz, as required. • Maintain an organized archive of communications materials (news clippings, photos, videos, reports). • Perform other communications-related duties as requested.
Qualifications/special skills
Applicants must meet one of the following requirements: • be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher in communications, journalism, marketing, media studies, public relations, international relations, political or social sciences, or a related field.); • be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme in communications, journalism, marketing, media studies, public relations, international relations, political or social sciences, or a related field. (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent). • Demonstrated skills in photography, videography, and use of editing/design software (Adobe Creative Suite, CapCut, Canva or similar). • Familiarity with social media platforms and content management. • Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines. • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail. • Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to work in a multicultural team environment. • Demonstrated gender awareness and sensitivity. • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
Languages
English and Russian are the working languages of the United Nations in Kyrgyzstan. For the position advertised, knowledge of English and Russian, both oral and written, is required. Working knowledge of Kyrgyz is an advantage.
Additional Information
• Applicants must be at least 19 years old and under the age of 30. • Must be enrolled in a university program or have graduated within the past two years. • Must not have immediate relatives working in the UN Secretariat or UNRCO Kyrgyzstan. The intern will work under the direct supervision of the Associate Communications Officer. • The internship is unpaid, and costs related to travel, insurance, accommodation, and living expenses must be borne by the intern. • The UN accepts no responsibility for costs arising from accidents, illness, or death during the internship.

Interns are not financially remunerated by the United Nations. Costs and arrangements for travel, visas, accommodation and living expenses are the responsibility of interns or their sponsoring institutions. Interns who are not citizens or permanent residents of the country where the internship is undertaken, may be required to obtain the appropriate visa and work/employment authorization. Successful candidates should discuss their specific visa requirements before accepting the internship offer.
