Duties and Responsibilities
Created in December 1999, the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) is the designated focal point in the United Nations system for the coordination of efforts to reduce disasters and to ensure synergies among the disaster reduction activities of the United Nations and regional organizations and activities in both developed and less developed countries. Led by the United Nations Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Disaster Risk Reduction (SRSG), United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction has over 140 staff located in its headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland, and in regional offices. Specifically, the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction guides, monitors, analyses and reports on progress in the implementation of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030, supports regional and national implementation of the Framework and catalyzes action and increases global awareness to reduce disaster risk working with U.N. Member States and a broad range of partners and stakeholders, including civil society, the private sector, parliamentarians and the science and technology community. This consultancy position is located in the UNDRR Regional Office for Arab States (ROAS). The consultant will work directly under the Programme Management Officer – Sendai Framework Monitoring. Duties and Responsibilities Under the supervision of the Programme Management Officer – Sendai Framework Monitoring in the Regional Office for Arab States, the Consultant will: 1. Participate at and provide technical input and support to the CADRI Diagnostic Mission from 12 to 23 May 2024 which aims to feed into the finalization of the National DRR Strategy in Djibouti. 2. Coordinate with the National Focal Point for Disaster Risk Reduction on next steps in finalizing the National DRR Strategy under the Comprehensive Risk Management (CRM) Initiative, based on the preliminary findings of the CADRI diagnostic mission. 3. Submit to UNDRR ROAS a revised plan for implementing CRM Initiative in Djibouti up until September 2025.
Qualifications/special skills
• Master or Equivalent degree in Development, Environmental Affairs, Disaster Risk Management, Climate Change or any other related field is required. • A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree. • At Least 3 years of work experience in disaster risk reduction, climate change adaptation or sustainable development programmes or related areas is required. • Experience in policy and strategy design in disaster risk reduction and climate change adaptation is required. • Experience in conducting research in disaster risk reduction or climate change adaptation is required. • Experience in global practice and best practices in DRR and Climate Change is desirable. • Previous experience working with UN or international organizations is desirable.
Languages
• Fluency in French (both oral and written) is required. • Knowledge of Arabic or English (written and oral) is desirable.
