Portfolio Manager, Relationships, Private Sector Engagement Department - GL D - Defined Duration until December 2025

The Global Fund’s Private Sector Engagement Department (PSED) principal goal is the mobilization of financial resources for the Global Fund. It does this by building funding partnerships with UHNIW Foundations and Companies.

In order to be effective in raising funds and to ensure that funds can be effectively deployed PSED works closely with the technical and grant management teams in the Global Fund to develop products, topical themes and other potential funding opportunities.

PSED identifies prospects for specific areas and within specific industries and develops strategies to engage and mobilized greater interest in supporting the Global Fund’s agenda. PSED also manages the existing pool of partners to not only retain funding for future Replenishments, but also nurture them as champions to engage other prospects.

These roles will be central to the success of the team, leading on specific portfolio development (technical themes), overseeing the development and implementation of prospect and partner management strategies and raising significant funds for the Global Funds.

The Portfolio Managers will be supported by a pool of portfolio officers.

Key Responsibilities

Reporting to the Head , PSED or the Senior Manager PSED the Portfolio Manager, Private Sector Engagement will:

  • Under the agreed PSE strategy framework support resource mobilization activities for High Net Worth Individuals (HNWIs), Foundations and Companies - identifying, under the strategy, high potential resource mobilization prospects and innovative resource mobilization models.
  • Generate significant funding from private sector donors, with a particular focus on Private Philanthropy (UHNWI and Foundations), as well as Corporates.
  • Build, nurture and manage the Global Fund’s Private Sector partnerships/relationships across all seniority levels of current and prospective donors.
  • Work closely with the Manager Prospect Strategies to develop prospect strategies to engage and motivate prospects to support the Global Fund. Including developing ambitious achievable targets for resource mobilization for the team.
  • Implement prospect strategies and respond to other ad hoc opportunities to mobilize significant financial resources for the Global Fund as per established targets.
  • Act as focal point for current and prospective donors as well as for a variety of other Global Fund stakeholders.
  • Devise, propose and implement detailed engagement strategies for current partners and other solutions aimed at enhancing partnerships.
  • Adapt engagement offering to individual donor requirements (incl. in-country and co-financing) and work closely with internal Global Fund stakeholders (in particular, Grant Management) to achieve fundraising goals.
  • Structure contributions, negotiate agreements (in cooperation with Legal), close deals and monitor cash flows.
  • Guide Portfolio Officer/s on tasks related to partnership’s management. Contribute actively to the development of the Private Sector outreach strategy and operational processes, including structuring of the value proposition and reporting etc.
  • Coordinate work to meet donors’ information/reporting needs.
  • Pro-actively coordinate high-quality delivery by internal stakeholders to donors
  • Develop and prepare presentations and other material for marketing and related activities
  • Organize and participate in high level donor visits and trips to showcase the impact of donor investments
  • Guide, as appropriate, research conducted by Portfolio Officer/s on donor prospects and market opportunities

Ensure the implementation of risk assessment and risk mitigation strategies for all private sector partners assigned to the portfolio in accordance with PSED policy.

  • Lead the development of agreed thematic or RM product agendas in close coordination with the Technical Team leads (TAP, IT etc). Coordinate the conceptualization of the theme, steering internal and external engagement to develop and high potential resource mobilizing agenda.
  • Coordinate the theme working group, including required support from PSED Managers and Head and the technical team leads – identifying and involving key internal & external stakeholders, with appropriate RM support, as part of the design;
  • Lead the Theme RM activities, coordinating comms and PCSA engagement
  • Report on progress and performance in the implementation of the theme RM activities .
  • Coordinate with the Technical team leads on the implementation of the thematic funding raised – including liaising with donors, managing reporting processes and partner engagement (in line with the tasks noted above)

Qualifications

Essential:

  • Advanced University degree (Masters level of equivalent); or,
  • Relevant first degree and at least 10 years of relevant post first-degree work experience.

Desirable:

  • Advanced degree in Business Administration or other as relevant.

Experience

Essential:

  • At least six years of professional experience in the private sector or working with the private sector (e.g. in fundraising) or on private-sector related themes;
  • Sales & marketing experience;
  • Successful track record in relationship management on an international level;
  • Expertise on the Finance and Banking Sector;
  • Expertise on development issues and understanding of development co-operation.

Desirable:

  • Professional experience working in a developing country.
  • Previous (philanthropic) fund-raising experience.
  • Understanding of global health issues and the three diseases.
  • Understanding of innovative financing vehicles, e.g. trust funds.
  • Experience in grant development or loan management.

Competencies

Languages:

Fluency in written and spoken English is required. Additional languages would be an advantage.
