The Department

The Marketing & Communications department’s purpose is to amplify and support Mercy Corps’s mission by raising unrestricted funds, strengthening supporter partnerships and raising our global profile and influence, and fostering team collaboration and connectivity.

The role of the Marketing team is to guide the direction of Mercy Corps global brand and develop and implement strategies to promote brand awareness and drive a sustainable base of unrestricted financial support, particularly among mass-market supporter audiences.

The Position

The Director of Marketing, Europe, a new role on the team, will lead on the development and execution of Mercy Corps marketing and brand strategy in Europe. The Director will be responsible for setting up the Marketing function in Europe including building and leading a matrixed team. The role will focus on creating impactful marketing and communication campaigns to drive awareness of Mercy Corps’ brand resulting in revenue growth and position Mercy Corps as a leader in delivering impactful solutions for global challenges, particularly in areas such as climate resilience, disaster response, and sustainable development.

The Director of Marketing, Europe is an ambitious leader, adept at building brand profile and delivering revenue results through the advancement of Mercy Corps’ mass marketing channels online and offline. As a proven marketing leader, the Director is skilled at leading collaborative teams to drive audience engagement in ways that advance strategy and increase profile in Europe, specifically the UK and The Netherlands, working closely with the European Executive Director, to ensure the team delivers on the European Strategic Plan.

Leading on integrated mass-market audience acquisition and donor retention, the Director is responsible for planning and overseeing strategic marketing initiatives to advance brand awareness and increase supporter engagement, advocacy, and fundraising audiences in Europe, primarily the UK. A visionary, and a data-driven leader, this person will ensure measurement and reporting on performance content to adapt and grow the program.

The Director of Marketing, Europe will collaborate closely across the Global Marketing Department on marketing strategies and campaign executions as well as meaningful and exciting opportunities for our new and established audience engagement. The Director of Marketing, Europe will ensure our marketing programs in Europe reflect our global brand while building trust and growing awareness with key audiences.

Essential Responsibilities

STRATEGY AND VISION

Lead on the development and delivery of the Marketing strategy for Europe.

Build and lead the integrated marketing function in Europe which includes digital marketing, content marketing and lead generation in addition to acquisition, renewal, and regular giving in support of year on year growth.

Align European strategic marketing projects with overall business objectives in support of global marketing goals.

Develop and deliver project-based annual and/or multi-year strategic, integrated marketing plans to support growth goals and profile building in Europe.

Collaborate on new, creative approaches that motivate donors and supporters to engage with Mercy Corps, through strategies that are ahead of the traditional marketing/fundraising curve.

In collaboration with other Marketing and Communications team leaders, ensure creative excellence, brand and messaging consistency in line with our vision, voice and style across all channels and platforms.

Develop and oversee annual budgets and planning for the European marketing strategy.

Manage the annual planning process for the European Marketing strategy in Europe to ensure short- and long-term departmental goals and objectives are defined, communicated, and met.

Analyse, report on and measure campaign performance and derive actionable insights leveraging marketing analytics tools in partnership with Marketing and Development Operations leadership.

Oversee and ensure the success of marketing/fundraising response during global emergencies, coordinating channels and tactics with urgency and clarity, and communicating results to senior stakeholders.

Serve as part of the European Senior Leadership Team and Marketing and Communications Leadership Team.

TEAM MANAGEMENT

Establish a Marketing Function in Europe and hire key team members within this newly established function.

Provide team members with information, tools, and other resources to improve performance, expand capacities, and reach objectives.

create and sustain a work environment of mutual respect where team members strive to achieve excellence.

promote accountability, communicate expectations and provide constructive feedback via regular performance reviews.

contribute to team-building efforts, help team members identify problem-solving options and ensure the integration of all team members into relevant decision-making processes.

Supervisory Responsibility

Responsible for managing the Marketing team in Europe, anticipate an initial team of 3-4.

Accountability

Reports Directly To: VP of Marketing and Executive Director, Europe

Works Directly With: Marketing, Development, Development Operations, Media & Communications, European Senior Leaders and teams across Mercy Corps.

Accountability to Participants and Stakeholders

Mercy Corps team members are expected to support all efforts toward accountability, specifically to our program participants, community partners, other stakeholders, and to international standards guiding international relief and development work. We are committed to actively engaging communities as equal partners in the design, monitoring and evaluation of our field projects.

Minimum Qualification & Transferable Skills

Bachelor’s Degree, or equivalent professional experience

7+ years of relevant professional experience in marketing, demonstrating strong leadership skills, and a genuine interest in industry trends driving impact across the funnel.

7+ years of supervisory experience required.

7+ years leading a high-performing Marketing function within another charity/non-profit.

Experience managing complex cross-team projects, including budgets and timelines, required

Exceptional writing skills, with the ability to craft powerful briefs, platform messages, and narratives.

Experience working across European markets is strongly preferred.

Senior leadership experience is preferred.

Experience leading a team with proven ability to communicate, delegate, build a team and develop direct reports.

Ability to balance the need for creativity with a data-driven approach to measuring impact, success and results.

A proven track record for solving complex problems.

Exceptional attention to detail and ensures accuracy in all communications deliverables.

Ability to influence at all levels of the organization.

Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, ambiguous environment.

Excellent interpersonal skills, with an ability to communicate clearly and passionately, both in writing and verbally. Positive attitude and solution-oriented approach to work is a must.

With a strong marketing background, they will be able to take a long strategic view while overseeing extensive production and performance analysis. They will have the ability to evaluate complex data and information, and translate these findings to teammates and leadership. Moving quickly in times of global emergency, they will be able to intuitively judge moments of opportunity and activate them. Experience in matrixed teams, an entrepreneurial spirit, and creative problem solving will be key to their success.

Living Conditions / Environmental Conditions

This position is based in London or Edinburgh or remote home-working location in the UK and will be required to travel to Mercy Corps in Europe’s offices across the UK and the European continent and occasionally travel to the US. This position may be asked to travel on occasion with little notice.

Mercy Corps team members represent the agency both during and outside work hours when deployed in a country program or on a visit/TDY to a program site. Team members are expected to conduct themselves in a professional manner and respect local laws, customs and MC's policies, procedures, and values at all times and in all in-country venues.
