The mission of the joint World Bank Group (WBG) / International Monetary Fund (IMF) Health and Safety Directorate (HSDDR) is to protect staff health and safety wherever they may be, taking account their individual health status, working environment and job demands. HSDDR serves the staff of two international organizations as they strive to reduce global poverty, enhance shared prosperity, and sustain economic growth globally. The two organizations employ more than 20,000 staff, with around 60% based in Washington DC Headquarters (HQ), and the rest in Country Offices (CO) globally in more than 150 locations.

Current Duties and Responsibilities

• The Occupational Health (OH) Medical team (doctors and nurses) work within the Health and Safety Directorate providing support and services to the staff of the World Bank Group and the IMF. These services include an advisory role to headquarter and country office staff and managers on sick leave, disability, and disability accommodation related matters; fitness for work medical examinations (including driver’s medical examination results) and working with safety and environmental health specialists. 

• As part of the OH Medical team rolling out the rights-based accommodation framework for staff working with disabilities, you will collaborate with staff and managers, providing support during return to work and in the optimization of the workplace environment to achieve reasonable accommodation supporting inclusion and equity. 

• You will collaborate closely with members of the OH safety, road safety and ergonomics teams in reviewing and mitigating occupational health and safety risks and incidents and will liaise with staff from the Personal Health and Wellness teams in providing support to individual staff and country units.

• In addition, the role includes being part of the implementation of management/population health strategies such as staff health and wellness programs, road safety programs and environmental medicine research, with the requirement to apply evidence-based best practices, outcome measurements and continuous quality improvement.

• You will report directly to the Manager, Occupational Health and Safety and be responsible for delivery of services within this work program with specific emphasis on the interactions between work and health, accommodation support, risk management and the impact of the external environment on the workplace.

• As a physician, you will adhere to the confidentiality standards in the policies of the World Bank Group and Health and Safety Directorate.

• Additional responsibilities will be assigned in accordance with your education, training, and experience.

• Please note that while this is a non-clinical role, a strong medical background and understanding of healthcare is essential.

Technical Competencies:
Medical Skills: A Physician with broad- based medical knowledge and experience and skills to provide evidence-based evaluation and advisory of illness and injury in international and travel settings and understand the impact of these for the individual and the workplace.

Work Fitness and Disability Management: knowledge and skills to assess whether members can safely be at work and complete required job duties (including review of driver medical examinations). Skills to advise on appropriate workplace accommodations and return to work planning.

International Healthcare: skills and understanding of the international medical landscape and the impact this has on access to care. 

Hazard Recognition, Evaluation, and Control: knowledge and skills necessary to assess whether there is risk of an adverse event from exposure to physical, chemical, biological, ergonomic, or psychological hazards in the workplace or environment.

Emergency Preparedness annd Management: Role in emergency preparedness and emergency management, protecting staff from the health consequences of disasters. 

Health and Productivity: Ability to identify and address individual and workplace organizational factors to optimize the health of staff and enhance productivity, such as absenteeism, presenteeism,  and population health management.

Public Health, Surveillance, and Disease Prevention: knowledge and skills relating to medical surveillance programs for staff and should be able to apply primary, secondary, and tertiary preventive methods.

Epidemiology and basic data analytics skills: ability to collect and visualize data related to his/her tasks, build evidence based programs, monitor and evaluate work related indicators, prepare reports for senior management.

Critical Thinker: Ability to interpret data, understand health trends and formulate plans of action to address developing health needs.

Communications: knowledge and skills in understanding and communicating medical information to non-medical persons in an easily digestible fashion.

Teamwork: Competent member of a multi-disciplinary team, active contributor, comfortable being a team member as well as a leader.

Related Staff Rules and Legislation: knowledge and skills necessary to comply with rules important to occupational and environmental health, as well as the wide range of rules and guidelines related to the interactions between staff health, work, and environment. The Occupational Health Physician needs to interact knowledgeably with human resource partners, managers, safety and security professionals, staff association leaders, and legal counsel.

Selection Criteria

• A medical degree with specialist post graduate training and / or experience in Occupational Medicine/Emergency Medicine/Family Medicine or equivalent combination of education and experience from a recognized college or university.
• At least 8 years work experience in the field of Occupational Medicine / Corporate Medicine; with at least 5 years’ experience working in an occupational health setting primarily medical adjudication (including driver medical fitness), travel  and international health. 
• High level proficiency Microsoft office.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills.
• Excellent organizational, analytical, and reporting skills.
• Ability to understand and interpret data and trends.
• Demonstrated teamwork experience and cultural sensitivity.
• Proficiency in English with additional languages being an advantage.

Additional Education/Experience Preferred
• Current medical licensure in the US.
• Documented ability to operate successfully in a culturally complex setting.
• Experience in the impact of climate change on global health.
• Proven work experience in the development, coordination and implementation of global occupational health and medical support programs for international organizations worldwide.
• Communications – blogging and articles in the healthcare setting for lay and medical audiences
• Interest or experience with AI applications in medicine.
• Interest or experience in training emergency response to lay rescuers.
• Experience in road safety and assessment of drivers.
• Experience in implementing reasonable work accommodations using recognized guidelines such as the ADA.
• Excellent communicator, experience in teaching / training / presenting at high level.
