In Sudan, UN Women’s humanitarian mandate is grounded in its global responsibility to advance gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls, ensuring that humanitarian action fully integrates gender perspectives and responds to the specific needs of women and girls in crisis. At the coordination level, UN Women provides technical expertise and leadership within the UN humanitarian architecture — including the Humanitarian Country Team (HCT), inter-cluster mechanisms— to mainstream gender into humanitarian planning, policy, monitoring and accountability frameworks, and to strengthen system-wide adherence to gender commitments. It supports the establishment and functioning of gender coordination platforms such as the inter-agency Gender in Humanitarian Action (GiHA) Working Group and promotes the meaningful participation of women’s rights and women-led organizations in humanitarian coordination and decision-making through the HCT Women’s Advisory Group (WAG).
To avoid any language barriers between Arabic and non-Arabic speakers, the consultant is required to support with oral interpretation of Arabic to English and vice versa during regular and GiHA WG and WAG meetings, and related ad-hoc events, workshops and high-level engagements. The consultant is also required to support written translation for key documents, knowledge products, data collection surveys, etc. that support the work of UN Women in humanitarian context. Meetings and documents that require this service are highly confidential and sensitive. The translation may be produced on a periodic or as-needed basis. In this regard, once the contract is signed, the consultant will be engaged on an on-call basis and requested to be available based on UN Women’s needs and constraints.
The consultant will be reporting to the Gender in Humanitarian Action Programme Analyst, and will be supported by the humanitarian team, who will be the point of contact on the contract and payment issues.

While the primary service of this consultancy is oral interpretation, applicants are also requested to support on written translation services from Arabic to English and from English to Arabic.

Required Qualifications
Education and Certification:
• Bachelor’s degree in translation and interpreting or related fields is required.
• Language Certification, individual/corporate membership of international licensed translator or of other accredited professional language institutions is an asset.
• Proficiency in the 2 languages (English and Arabic)
• Outstanding reading, writing, translation, editing and interpreting skills.
• Knowledge and understanding of technical matters in the working languages.
