Internal and external candidates will be considered for this vacancy. For the purposes of this vacancy, internal candidates are defined as staff members holding a regular, fixed-term or short-term graded or ungraded contract, including Junior Professional Officers (JPOs), staff on Special Leave Without Pay (SLWOP), UN Volunteers with at least twelve (12) months of continuous service in IOM, and staff members on secondment/loan released by the Organization, unless otherwise specified in their contract. Staff members holding a regular, fixed-term or short-term graded contract will not retain their contract type if appointed to an ungraded position.

Organizational Context and Scope

IOM operates Five Accommodation Centers for Unaccompanied Minors (Shelters) providing accommodation and access to services for Unaccompanied Migrant Children (UMC). Besides accommodation, the following services are provided to the beneficiaries: addressing basic needs, catering, hygiene, legal counselling, and information about life opportunities in Greece, interpretation, psychosocial support, medical support, Greek learning programs, learning support, organization of intercultural activities, work and career guidance.

Within the framework of the actions: "Subsidy N.P. INTERNATIONAL ORGANIZATION FOR MIGRATION (IOM) MISSION GREECE for the implementation of the project "Operation of K.F.A.A. Kypseli I" with MIS Code 6016486 the Program "Greece Programme - Asylum, Migration and Integration Fund 2021-2027", and under the overall supervision of the Project Coordinator and the direct supervision of the Shelter Coordinator, the successful candidate will provide support in implementing project activities through provision of interpretation and/ or translation services for the UMC in the accommodation facility. 

  1. Assist with interpretation for effective communication between IOM staff and the UMC.
  2. Facilitate communication, through interpretation and / or translation, in a spoken or written language understood by the UMC, between the UMC and the staff.
  3. Provide information to the staff to better comprehend the perceptions of migrants. Act as a cultural mediator during the UMC’s adjustment periods to their new environment. Assist with the interpretation between the UMC and health providers.
  4. Translate information materials to be disseminated to the UMC.
  5. Facilitate the communication of minors with public authorities, services and local bodies with which they come into contact.
  6. Perform such other duties as may be assigned.

Required Qualifications and Experience

Education

  • High school degree/certificate.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Interpretation/Translation, Social Science, Humanities, or relevant discipline would be considered as an advantage.
Accredited Universities are those listed in the UNESCO World Higher Education Database.
Experience
  • Previous experience in a similar role and/or certification/training preferred;
  • Familiar with direct assistance to migrants and/or refugees preferred;
  • Experience in working in a multi-cultural environment an advantage.
Skills
  • Computer literacy in standard software applications (MS Office, etc);
  • Willingness to work in day shifts and in emergencies in night shifts, during holidays and weekends;
  • Valid driver’s license with at least five years driving experience an advantage.
Languages

All IOM staff members in all categories are required to be fluent in one of the IOM's official languages (English, French, Spanish).

For this position, working knowledge of English or Greek is required.

Fluency in Arabic (written and oral) is required.

Proficiency of language(s) required will be specifically evaluated during the selection process, which may include written and/or oral assessments.
