The Environmental Health and WASH Program under HSPSD focuses on understanding human susceptibility to environmental hazards and developing effective water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) interventions to reduce related disease burdens. One of the strategic priorities of icddr,b which is primarily led by the Environmental Health and WASH group is “Determining and mitigating environmental contaminants and evaluating WASH strategies for improved health”. HeatShield study of the Environmental Health and WASH Program is aimed at identifying temperature thresholds associated with heat-related health risks to inform early warning systems and protective measures for agricultural workers. The study will also assess the effectiveness of heat warning dissemination and training programs in improving knowledge, adaptive practices, and health outcomes among agricultural workers and field-level agriculture staff. Additionally, it will pilot the National Heat-Related Illness Guideline in healthcare facilities to strengthen clinical preparedness and management, and explore multi-sectoral stakeholder engagement to support anticipatory action and sustainable heat adaptation strategies.
Duties and responsibilities
The position holder will report to the Associate Scientist and will be responsible for collecting data, processing, analyzing, and interpreting data; also providing technical support in writing scientific reports, protocols, and manuscripts within the guidelines of the research protocol, and also within the organization's values and guidelines. S/he will be involved in the following activities-
- Conduct environmental health assessments related to heat exposure, climate variability, and occupational risks, and support climate and environmental data collection, including temperature monitoring and exposure assessment;
- Contribute to designing climate adaptation strategies that address environmental risks and public health impacts;
- Provide inputs in developing guidelines or tools for integrating health considerations into climate resilience planning;
- Track project progress against timelines, maintain monitoring dashboards, and document key study achievements;
- Prepare narrative reports, project workplans, and other required technical documentation;
- Arrange learning and reflection sessions, stakeholder meetings, and dissemination events;
- Lead community engagement initiatives using participatory and co-creation approaches;
- Develop behavior change communication (BCC) materials, including flip charts and training manuals, and conduct farmer training, capacity-building, and awareness sessions;
- Conduct qualitative interviews with farmer training participants and develop coding frameworks for analysis using NVivo software;
- Train and supervise field staff to ensure high-quality data collection and adherence to research protocols;
- Identify emerging research opportunities and assist in developing research proposals under the guidance of the supervisor;
- Prepare and submit manuscripts to peer-reviewed journals and contribute to other scientific publications;
- Develop presentation materials, present findings at conferences and stakeholder platforms, and perform other research-related duties as required.
Required qualification and experience:
- Master’s degree in Environmental Science from a reputed university with an excellent academic record;
- Minimum 5 years of relevant experience;
- Preference will be given to the candidates who have critical thinking skills, the ability to identify and resolve substantive problems. S/he should be proactive, dynamic, and capable of working independently.

Contract Type and duration:
- Short-Term Contractual Service Agreement; duration will be 6 months with a possibility of extension subject to availability of funds and performance.
Salary & benefits:
- Tk 83,547/-(consolidated) per month, inclusive of house rent and conveyance allowances;
