The Asian Development Bank Institute (ADBI) seeks an experienced Publishing Consultant to manage the full publication cycle of ADBI Press and related knowledge products, ensuring high-quality, timely, and impactful outputs that support ADBI’s mission.
Responsibilities
A. Publication Management
- Manage the scheduling, production, and delivery of ADBI Press books, working papers, policy briefs, case studies, blogs, and other knowledge products from design to distribution.
- Coordinate printing, layout, design, and digital publishing workflows.
- Ensure quality control and consistent style across ADBI publications as well as adherence to ADBI’s institutional “tone of voice” across ADBI written products.
B. Editing Content Support
- Assist in editing copy or draft materials submitted by subject expert authors
- Provide writing, style guidance, and editorial support to Outreach colleagues as needed.
C. Vendor & Partner Management and Coordination
- Manage a network of external editors, designers, translators, printers, and production vendors.
- Oversee procurement‑related decisions and monitor vendor performance.
D. Budget & Planning
- Manage publication‑related budgets and accurately forecast annual expenditures.
- Support planning and implementation of the annual communications and outreach plan.
E. Promotion & Communications
- Lead promotional activities for key publications, including development of infographics, video scripts, and marketing copy.
- Coordinate publication‑related communications and audience targeting together with Outreach staff.
G. Committee Work
- Lead the Publications Committee and any related subcommittees or working groups established thereunder, with the support of Head, Communications and Outreach.
H. Other
- Perform other tasks as assigned to support Communications, Outreach, and publishing functions.
Selection Criteria
- University degree in communications, publishing, journalism, international development, or a related field.
- At least 3 years of experience in managing publication cycles, including editing, production, and vendor coordination.
- Strong editorial, copy‑editing, and writing skills; ability to refine technical content.
- Proven ability to manage publication budgets and forecasting.
- Strong project management, organizational, and multi-tasking capabilities.
- Excellent communication skills in English (native level)
- Experience in an international, research, or policy‑oriented organization preferred.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with diverse teams and external partners.
Term and Application Procedure
This position is offered on a consultant (independent contractor) basis and will be based in Tokyo for an initial term of two years, with the possibility of renewal subject to performance and institutional requirements. The first year will constitute a probationary period, and the consultancy contracts will be issued on an annual basis.
Consultants are not considered officers or staff of ADBI. They operate under the direct supervision of designated ADBI professional staff and the overall guidance of the department head. Please note that this consultancy does not include social insurance coverage.
Eligible applicants must be nationals of one of the ADB member economies.
This position is open to applicants residing in Japan or overseas. For successful applicant relocating from outside Japan, ADBI will provide the necessary supporting documents for obtaining a working visa in Japan. Relocation or moving expenses are not provided as part of this consultancy engagement.
