Job Summary:

The Human Laboratory and Diagnostic Officer will support the day-to-day implementation of human health laboratory activities under the STRIDES Jordan Activity. Working under the supervision of the Laboratory and Diagnostic Advisor, the Human Lab and Diagnostic Officerwill provide technical and operational support across human laboratory workstreams, assist in the development of laboratory tools and materials, and coordinate with health facility laboratory staff, government counterparts, and implementing partners as directed. The position contributes to strengthening human health laboratory systems, quality management, capacity building, donor reporting, and workplan tracking, in alignment with Jordan’s national laboratory standards and international best practices.

Accountabilities:

  • Supports day-to-day implementation of human health laboratory activities through technical support of activities such as specimen collection, testing, quality control, and results reporting at the facility and national levels.

  • Assists in the development and dissemination of laboratory protocols, standard operating procedures, training materials, and technical guidance for human health diagnostic services.

  • Supports strengthening of quality management systems in human health laboratories, including preparation for accreditation assessments (e.g., ISO 15189, SLIPTA).

  • Monitors and maintains laboratory protocols, instruments, data sets, manuals, and training materials.

  • Conducts searches of published literature on evolving issues in laboratory diagnostics, molecular methods, and related public health areas.

  • Responds to technical requests and inquiries from internal and external staff related to human laboratory activities.

  • Supports implementation of laboratory activities under the STRIDES Jordan workplan and tracks delivery of outputs against agreed timelines.

  • Ensures human laboratory technical implementation is consistent with best practices and meets donor contractual obligations.

  • Supports engagement with the Ministry of Health laboratory department and health facility counterparts on laboratory systems and standards, as directed by the Laboratory and Diagnostic Advisor.

  • Coordinates with operations and finance teams to support timely and on-budget implementation of laboratory activities.

  • Drafts technical progress reports on human laboratory activities and contributes to all donor reporting requirements.

  • Prepares and delivers presentations on laboratory progress to the project team and relevant stakeholders.

  • Contributes to the development and review of annual workplans and human laboratory technical deliverables.

  • Assists with the development of proposals and human laboratory technical design documents, based on direction from technical leadership.

Applied Knowledge & Skills:

  • Working knowledge of human health laboratory systems, diagnostic methods, and quality management frameworks, including familiarity with ISO 15189, SLIPTA, and WHO laboratory standards.

  • Understanding of Jordan’s public health laboratory network, including relevant Ministry of Health structures and national laboratory standards, is an advantage.

  • Understanding of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and familiarity with AMR laboratory detection.

  • Experience supporting human health laboratory strengthening programs in Jordan or the broader MENA region preferred.

  • Professional proficiency in both Arabic and English, written and verbal, is required.

  • Strong organizational and analytical skills, with ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines.

  • Proficiency in MS Office and relevant laboratory data management tools.

  • Ability to analyze and interpret laboratory data, identify errors, and prepare clear and accurate reports

Supervision Given/Received:

  • Reports to the Laboratory and Diagnostic Advisor.

  • Has no formal supervisory responsibility; may provide guidance to junior or support staff.

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree or its international equivalent in Medical Laboratory Sciences, Biomedical Sciences, Public Health, Microbiology, or a related field. Advanced degree preferred.

Experience:

  • Minimum 4+ years of relevant experience in human health laboratory systems, diagnostics, or a related technical area.

  • Experience supporting human health laboratory strengthening programs in Jordan or the MENA region preferred.

  • Prior work experience in a non-governmental organization, government agency, or private organization operating in the public health or global health security space
