Organizational Context and Scope

Under the overall supervision of the Chief of Mission and direct supervision of the Senior Resources Management Associate, the incumbent shall be responsible for driving IOM vehicles to transport persons and goods authorized by IOM, from one destination to another in a timely, safe and cost-effective manner.

  1. Drive assigned IOM office vehicle(s).

  2. Guide, monitor and organize the transportation schedules in the unit/office/duty station;

  3. Manage the day-to-day maintenance of the assigned vehicle(s) to ensure roadworthiness of the vehicles. This includes daily check of tires, brakes, engine oil, fan belt, etc.;

  4. Arrange for minor repairs and ensures that the vehicles are kept clean; through minor maintenance;

  5. Ensure that the vehicles undertake regular service intervals;

  6. Keep records of spare parts for vehicle(s) and conduct monthly inventory of the spare parts;

  7. Find the most direct and safe route over the best available roads to the destination.

  8. Ensure that the IOM vehicle(s) is used only for official/authorized business, as advised by the supervisor;

  9. Make sure that the daily log sheet is prepared, and a monthly report is prepared summarizing statistics linked to mileage, fuel consumption, etc. for the vehicle;

  10. Keep a high degree of confidentiality and discreteness in discussions, which involves IOM and its officials. Take proper actions to reduce potential security threats to IOM officials and/or property within the immediate vicinity of the vehicle and along transport routes;

  11. Meet official personnel at the airport(s) and facilitate immigration and customs formalities as required;

  12. Collect and deliver mail, documents, pouches, and other communications/items from and to the country office; go to the post office, airport, government agencies, other UN agencies, institutions, project sites, etc., to take and deliver items and communications; keep records as required;

  13. When needed, assist the country office staff in performing simple clerical duties such as making and answering telephone calls, making photocopies, scanning, keeping records, etc.;

  14. Brief and train drivers in all the above duties and responsibilities;

  15. When required, complete accident reports; and,

  16. Perform such other duties as may be assigned.

Required Qualifications and Experience

Education

  • High school degree/certificate with minimum 3 years of relevant working experience or Bachelor’s Degree with minimum 1 year of relevant working experience from an accredited institution.
  • Valid national driver’s licence.

Accredited Universities are those listed in the UNESCO World Higher Education Database.

Experience and Skills

  • At least two years continuous driving experience;
  • Experience in driving official or institutional vehicles;
  • Previous experience with an international organization or diplomatic missions would be an advantage;
  • Basic knowledge of vehicle maintenance and repairs;
  • Excellent knowledge of traffic laws;
  • Basic knowledge of computers especially on Microsoft office such as word, excel and outlook is required;
  • Strong interpersonal and intercultural skills;
  • Flexibility in terms of working hours; availability to work during weekends and after hours as requested;
  • Experience with Microsoft Office, Word, and Excel.

Languages

All IOM staff members in all categories are required to be fluent in one of the IOM's official languages (English, French, Spanish).

For this position, fluency in English and French is required; knowledge of Mauritian Creole is desirable.

Proficiency of language(s) required will be specifically evaluated during the selection process, which may include written and/or oral assessments.
