Duties and Responsibilities
The United Nations Health Care Center in, Ethiopia, provides essential medical services and medico administrative Services to UN staff, their dependents, and other eligible beneficiaries. The Center aims to deliver high-quality, patient-centered care and support public health initiatives within the UN community. The Laboratory Technologist role encompasses a broad range of responsibilities, including the provision of technical support during routine and emergency medical interventions. The technician works collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team and is expected to uphold high standards of professionalism and patient care. Additionally, the position involves maintaining a safe laboratory environment by following established biosafety guidelines and participating in ongoing training and quality improvement initiatives. It ensures client safety and satisfaction, while upholding the organization's health-related rules and regulations. Under the overall guidance of the Chief Medical Officer and the direct supervision of the Head of Laboratory, the Laboratory Technologist is responsible for the following duties and responsibilities: · Emergency a Services: The Laboratory Technologist must be available during off-hours and weekends to respond to emergencies. and weekends to respond to emergencies. · Conduct routine laboratory tests, including hematology, clinical chemistry, urinalysis, parasitology, microbiology, serology, immunology and other clinical laboratory tests following established standard operating procedures (SOPs). · Collect, prepare, and analyze patient samples, · Ensuring accuracy and efficiency while adhering to quality control standards. · Prepare and ensure compliance with SOPs, job aids, and policies for each test performed. · Implement and conduct laboratory tests in accordance with SOPs to guarantee accurate, reliable, and timely results. · Validate all test results before final reports are released to clinicians. · Report test outcomes promptly, enter them into the electronic system, and communicate critical or abnormal results to the responsible physician without delay. · Calibrate, operate, and maintain laboratory equipment; troubleshoot issues and report any malfunctions or discrepancies to senior staff. · Accurately record and document test results, maintaining organized laboratory records according to health center protocols. · Follow all safety protocols and maintain a clean, sterile laboratory environment, efficiently implementing SOPs to ensure high-quality standards. · Assist with the validation and implementation of new laboratory tests and procedures. · Coordinate the establishment and implementation of a quality management system aligned with the latest ISO 15189 standard and support all related quality activities in the laboratory. · Ensure laboratory compliance with regulatory standards and accreditation requirements, demonstrating proficiency in ISO standards (ISO 15189, 15190, 17025). · Support and manage inventory of laboratory supplies, reagents, and consumables, providing prompt reports before shortages occur. · Serve as custodian of all laboratory equipment in the duty station and conducts periodic inventory. · Regularly monitor and record temperatures of the laboratory environment and equipment. · Monitor and ensure biosafety compliance for all laboratory staff in the collection, preparation, processing, storage, and disposal of infectious biological samples and diagnostic testing. · Maintain comprehensive documentation of samples, laboratory results, and other activities, ensuring compliance with the organization's data protection and confidentiality policies. · Perform other related duties as assigned by the supervisor.
Qualifications/special skills
Education · University degree in Medical Laboratory Technology is required. · Current unrestricted registration with the medical licensing authority of Ethiopia is required. · Training in Laboratory Quality Management System, ISO 15189, SLIPTA, Laboratory audit, lab. Biosafety is required. Experience · Minimum of eight (8) years of progressive working experience in a well-organized and full-service laboratory unit or related area is required. · Work experience in an international organization is an advantage. · Computer Skills – Proficient ability to use a computer and electronic medical record is an advantage. Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the job advertised, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is an advantage.

Special Notice: 1. Although this position falls under ECA where the recruitment and selection process is managed; the contract administration will be handled through United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS) under contract term of "Local Individual Contractor Agreement". 2. The UN Clinic is in the field operates during working hours of the duty station. In addition, staff are expected to be on call for emergencies. 3. Evaluation of qualified candidates will consist of a technical assessment test followed by a competency-based interview. 4. The Selected Candidate can be deployed to other UNHCC satellite clinics as per organizational need. 5. THIS IS A LOCALLY RECRUITED POSITION FOR WHICH ONLY APPLICANTS WHO ARE ETHIOPIAN NATIONALS OR APPLICANTS WHO POSSESS A VALID RESIDENCE AND WORK PERMIT IN ETHIOPIA ARE ELIGIBLE FOR CONSIDERATION. A work permit or License to practice in Ethiopia is required.
