How can you make a difference? 

Based in Xai Xai, the Nutrition Emergency Consultant (Floods Response) will provide technical, operational, and coordination support to UNICEF’s nutrition emergency response in Gaza Province, ensuring timely, high-quality, and accountable delivery of lifesaving nutrition interventions in line with UNICEF core commitments for children in humanitarian settings, Nutrition Cluster guidance, and national policies.

Under the supervision of the Nutrition Specialist, and in close coordination with the Nutrition Cluster, Government counterparts, and implementing partners, the consultant will undertake the following tasks:

  • Oversee the Nutrition activities of the UNICEF Response Plan for the flood emergency. Facilitate strong linkages between UNICEF-led interventions, partner activities, and Government-led response efforts to avoid duplication and maximize coverage.
  • Actively support the provincial nutrition cluster in Gaza, including participation in coordination meetings, joint planning, and follow-up with partners. Support coordination with provincial and district health authorities, NGOs, and other relevant Government counterparts on nutrition emergency response planning and implementation.
  • Provide technical support to the provincial and district health services in the implementation of integrated mobile brigades, including performing rapid nutrition screenings and assessments among affected populations using available tools, ensuring children with wasting receive treatment onsite or referral to nearby health facilities.
  • Delivering a two-day training on nutrition in emergencies for Nutrition Supervisors, Health Workers, and Community Health Workers from Xai Xai and neighboring districts hosting affected populations.
  • In liaison with UNICEFF CHN Supply & Logistics Specialist, and Supply Section, supporting the government for the rapid prepositioning of nutrition supplies and treatment for wasting among identified children.
  • Support the regular screening and referral system to ensure early identification and treatment of wasting in children under five, in line with PRN protocol.
  • Support the government (DPS) with setting up breastfeeding corners in accommodation sites to provide counseling and support to breastfeeding mothers, thereby supporting safe infant and young child feeding practices during emergencies.
  • Support monitoring of the “Joint statement on infant feeding in emergencies”, including compliance with the Breastmilk Substitutes Code
  • In liaison with the government, providing regular reports in Portuguese to the Nutrition Cluster, including:
    • Number of children under five screened.
    • Number of children under five supplemented with vitamin A, deworming and MNPs through integrated mobile brigades
    • Number of children with wasting identified (SAM and MAM).
    • Compliance with the Joint statement/ Presence of breastmilk substitutes (BMS) donations at accommodation centres, and, where possible, the source of such donations.

To qualify as an advocate for every child you will have… 

  • A bachelor’s degree in public health, nutrition or relevant field.
  • At least 5 years progressive experience in public health nutrition programs.
  • Experience with the implementation and coordination of nutrition in emergencies activities
  • Oral and written fluency in Portuguese.
  • Experience in working with Ministry of Health and provincial health departments in Mozambique.
