In 2005, PIH and its Rwandan sister organization, Inshuti Mu Buzima (IMB), began working in partnership with the government of Rwanda to address the HIV/AIDS epidemic afflicting the population and to comprehensively strengthen the public health system in rural, underserved districts in Rwanda. Today, PIH supports delivery of comprehensive integrated non-communicable disease services in three rural districts of Rwanda, including cancer care. Cancer care is predominantly based at the flagship Butaro Cancer Center of Excellence (BCCOE), which was inaugurated in June 2012 and has since provided care to thousands of patients, with services ranging from cancer prevention, diagnosis, and treatment.

The R01 Research Manager in this position will focus on 2 implementation strategies (tele-ultrasound supervision and asynchronous virtual feedback) to facilitate decentralized breast ultrasound at Rwandan district hospitals. It will be implemented at 16 district hospitals across Rwanda

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:

The key responsibilities of this role will be the scientific aspects of the study implementation and the oversight over data collection, quality, and analysis.

  • Plan, coordinate, and execute research activities across study sites.
  • Develop and adapt research protocols, study procedures, and data collection tools in collaboration with investigators and the PIH team.
  • Collaborate with and support research coordinator and data collectors to ensure high-quality data collection.
  • Ensure timely completion of study milestones and data management.
  • Oversee study budgets and monitor expenses in alignment with donor requirements.
  • Maintain data security and oversee data quality assurance, cleaning, and analysis.
  • Prepare and submit study progress reports to investigators, funders, and stakeholders in collaboration with the wider study team.
  • Conduct preliminary and final analysis of study data, both qualitative and quantitative in collaboration with the research team.
  • Organise feedback and dissemination meetings with participating institutions and facility leadership.
  • Oversee and ensure compliance with national and international regulatory requirements.
  • Provide technical assistance and capacity building for clinical and programmatic teams.
  • Travel regularly across Rwanda to oversee study implementation at 16 sites.

Required Qualifications for the position

  • Advanced degree in Public Health, Nursing, Medicine, Global Health, Biostatistics, or related field.
  • Minimum 2 years of full-time research experience, preferably in implementation research.
  • Demonstrated skills in quantitative, qualitative, and mixed-methods research.
  • Proven ability to lead research projects from conception through completion.
  • Strong team management and leadership experience.
  • Experience working with clinicians, preferably in oncology or other NCDs.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and academic writing skills.
  • Proficiency in English and Kinyarwanda (spoken and written).
  • Skills in data collection and analysis software (e.g., STATA, MAXQDA, REDCap).
  • Experience with survey administration and qualitative data collection methods.
  • Experience working in international or multicultural organizations is an asset.
  • Flexibility to travel frequently and work in rural settings.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively across departments.
  • Be a team player and have ability to work independently with a very minimal supervision.
  • Having published a peer review paper is a plus.
