Dhaka Hospital was established by icddr,b in 1962 primarily to meet the urgent need to treat patients with severe diarrhoeal disease. It has since grown into a nationally important centre treating more than 200,000 patients a year. It acts as a beacon illustrating what can be achieved by a hospital facility even within a developing world setting. Dhaka Hospital provides an infrastructure for a wide range of clinical research projects. It also plays a critical role in areas such as disease surveillance, monitoring for antimicrobial resistance and clinical training. Dhaka Hospital offers a full range of services, particularly for diarrhoeal and respiratory disease, with infants and children representing a high proportion of patients. It delivers outstanding care, saving an estimated 40,000 lives that might otherwise be lost every year.

Key responsibilities:

The position holder will report to Head, Hospitals under Breastfeeding counselling units of Dhaka Hospital. The breastfeeding counsellor will provide counseling to mothers of 0-24 months old children, with emphasis on infants under six months to promote exclusive breast feeding, relactation, and optimal feeding practices. She will conduct daily ward rounds, demonstrate breastfeeding techniques, collaborate with doctors to identify mothers in need of support and participate in monitoring activities to evaluate the effectiveness of counselling services. The specific areas of responsibilities are detailed below:

• Identify mothers having babies of 0-6 months and provide individual counseling to adopt exclusive breastfeeding practice. Mothers with children aged 6-24 months will be advised on appropriate complementary feeding and continued breastfeeding practice
• Demonstrate and train mothers who lack knowledge and skills in breastfeeding including positioning and attachment techniques.
• Conduct individual and group counseling session on Exclusive Breast Feeding, and Infant and young child feeding (IYCF)
• Carry out follow-up survey and monitoring activities to assess the effectiveness of breastfeeding counselling services at Dhaka Hospital
• Conduct awareness and orientation sessions on breastfeeding for health workers, nurses, and doctors at icddr,b hospitals;
• Support and train project staff who require skills in breastfeeding counselling and assist with motivational activities under ongoing projects, as required
• Promote a spirit of collegiality and teamwork, respect diversity among team members;
• Organize and participate in events and activities related to motivation, publicity and promotion of breastfeeding practices

Required qualification and experience:

• Masters in Food and Nutrition related subjects;
• 3 years' relevant experience is required. Candidate having experience in hospital's counselling service management will get preference.

Contract Type and Duration:

• Contractual Services Agreement basis (CSA); duration will be 11 months with a possibility of extension subject to performance.

Salary & benefits:

• Tk. 50,267/- per month (consolidated) inclusive of house rent and conveyance allowances;
• Festival bonus, income tax paid by icddr,b and subsidized canteen; Transport and daycare facilities are subject to space availability.
