Duties and Responsibilities
The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) is part of the United Nations Secretariat responsible for bringing together humanitarian actors to ensure a coherent response to emergencies. OCHA also ensures a framework within which each actor can contribute to the overall response efforts. OCHA's mission is to mobilize and coordinate effective and principled humanitarian action in partnership with national and international actors to alleviate human suffering in disasters and emergencies; advocate the rights of people in need; promote preparedness and prevention and facilitate sustainable solutions. Within the Middle East and North Africa regional context, OCHA engages with partners and stakeholders to support humanitarian coordination, information-management and public outreach. The Social Media Intern will join the Regional Information Management and Public Information team in Amman, Jordan modality to be in hybrid (in-person, remote) to support digital communications and social media engagement. Under the overall guidance of the Humanitarian Affairs Officer (Public Information and Reporting Officer), the intern will contribute to the following: • Develop content for OCHA social media platforms in line with guidance and policies • Assist in the copy and design of social media posts, captions and content briefs in English and Arabic tailored for digital audiences, aligned with humanitarian priorities • Support with translation (English/Arabic) of social media and associated public information content (including briefings, stories, news articles, video captions, etc.) • Collaborate with social media focal points across the region as and where needed • Support the monitoring, analysis and reporting of social media performance (reach, engagement, trends) and assist in preparation of analytics dashboards and summary reports • Assist with the maintenance and updating of a social media editorial calendar for the region, identifying campaign opportunities, key events, milestones and humanitarian anniversaries. • Conduct social-media environment scans (platform trends, hashtags, audience behaviour) in the MENA region, and support recommendations for improving outreach, engagement and followership. • Perform other relevant duties as assigned
Qualifications/special skills
Applicants must meet one of the following requirements: (a) be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher) in Communications, Mass Media, Digital Media, Journalism, International Relations, Social Sciences, Humanities, Middle Eastern Studies, International Relations, Languages or related field. (b) be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent) in Communications, Mass Media, Digital Media, Journalism, International Relations, Social Sciences, Humanities, Middle Eastern Studies, International Relations, Languages or related field. Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience. However, a field of study in Communications, Mass Media, Digital Media, Journalism, International Relations, Social Sciences, Humanities, Middle Eastern Studies, International Relations, Languages is required Demonstrates familiarity with tools and basics of social media management and visual design for social media (e.g. Canva, Adobe Suite, or similar tools) is required. Demonstrates familiarity with major social media platforms in the Middle East and North Africa region, as well as analytics/monitoring tools and digital metrics-reporting is required. Strong writing skills and the ability to produce compelling short-form content for social platforms is required. A demonstrated interest in humanitarian affairs, digital communications and outreach in the Middle East region is desirable. Strong attention to detail and good organizational skills is desirable.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this internship fluency in reading, speaking, understanding and writing in English and Arabic is required.
