Duties and Responsibilities
This position is within the Office of the Assistant-Secretary General (OASG) of the International Impartial and Independent Mechanism to Assist in the Investigation and Prosecution of Persons Responsible for the Most Serious Crimes under International Law Committed in the Syrian Arab Republic since March 2011 (IIIM), located in Geneva, Switzerland. The Consultant will report directly to the Deputy Head of Entity. The purpose of the consultancy is to provide expert advice on the implementation and adaption, as required, of the IIIM’s commitment to inclusive justice, in particular through its victim/survivor-centred approach (VSCA) and associated thematic strategies on gender, children/youth and broader justice objectives (missing persons) across the substantive work of the IIIM. The Consultant will be responsible for implementing the IIIM’s revised architecture on VSCA and related strategies, as well as coordinating the related working group and steering committee. The consultant will also provide substantive legal and inclusive justice expertise to support the outputs of the IIIM produced for competent jurisdictions and other justice actors. This consultancy is intended to be carried out remotely and full time. The estimated start is 2 February 2026. Quarterly trips to Geneva are expected. Fulfilment of the responsibilities of this position may necessitate engagement with material and/or information that may be distressing. Qualifications/special skills
A master/advanced degree in law, political science, sociology, history or related field of study A minimum of 10 years of progressively responsible professional experience in international criminal law is required. Research, analysis and/or documentation work related to international crimes, particularly in addressing gender and other inclusive justice dimensions is required. Expert knowledge and understanding of gender in the context of Syrian society is required. Experience integrating a gender perspective in core international crimes cases, relevant policies and work processes is required. Experience in producing complex written legal analysis relating to core international crimes, with demonstrated knowledge of international crimes committed in Syria since 2011 is required.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the Secretariat. For this position fluency in English is required.
