The Global Agriculture and Food Security Programme (GAFSP) of the World Bank is supporting a multi-year project designed to strengthen the productive capacity and management of Soroti Sweetpotato Producers and Processors Association (SOSPPA). SOSPPA works with farmers and farmer groups to produce sweet potato seeds and roots for sale. It has also been undertaking small-scale processing and value-addition activities. The project will upgrade these activities and build SOSSPA’s governance capacity.
The specific objectives of the project are to: (a) Improve market access and farm incomes for SOSPPA farmers through Orange-Fleshed Sweet Potato (OFSP) marketing, processing, and value addition; (b) Increase productivity and production of sweet potato roots and vines, and other nutritious crops, amongst SOSPPA farmers; (c) Promote diversified utilization and consumption of OFSP products amongst SOSPPA members and in current and new markets; and (d) Strengthen SOSPPA’s governance and management capacities to deliver services to its members.
In line with its objective, the project focuses on linking farmers markets for fresh and processed products, improving use of good agronomic and regenerative practices, adding value/processing and nutrition, and efficient governance of producer organizations to deliver on the social and commercial responsibilities.
The International Potato Center (CIP) has been engaged as the Management Contractor, to provide technical backstopping and capacity building activities for SOSPPA. To support the implementation of project activities, CIP seeks to hire a dynamic driver to assist with project implementation of the GAFSP project in Uganda.
