Job Description

Are you passionate about data, problem-solving, and turning complex information into clear insights?

Do you enjoy maintaining and improving data systems, from legacy databases to modern reporting platforms?

Join our agile, self-organized team of engineers to help maintain and develop CERN's Corporate Information Systems! You'll be part of the Business Computing (BC) group, supporting Finance and Procurement.

Your mission: design, optimize, and operate reporting and data solutions that power evidence-based decision-making across CERN.

CERN, take part!

Your responsibilities:

  • Extract, transform, and visualize data in reports, dashboards, and analytics platforms.
  • Interact with relational databases (mainly Oracle) using SQL and PL/SQL.
  • Develop, maintain, and test data models and ETL/ELT pipelines supporting CERN's financial and procurement systems.
  • Maintain, support, and enhance existing (legacy) solutions while contributing to their gradual modernization.
  • Collaborate with business users, analysts, and developers to understand needs and ensure data consistency and usability.
  • Provide 3rd-level support, including troubleshooting, maintenance, and consultancy to business users.

Your profile:

  • Experience in SQL (writing, optimizing, debugging complex queries).
  • Familiarity with data visualization or analytics tools such as Power BI, R, or Python-based dashboards.
  • Exposure to data pipeline concepts and tools such as SQL, DBT, or Python for data processing.
  • Understanding of data modelling principles (dimensional/star schema design, semantic models, data warehouses).
  • Interest in providing end-user support, troubleshooting, escalation, and issue resolution.
  • Awareness of Finance and Procurement processes or interest in learning about business domains.
  • Experience working in group projects, ideally in collaborative or Agile environments.

Skills:

  • Excellent knowledge of SQL and relational databases.
  • Awareness of data quality, security, and governance concepts.
  • Knowledge of version control systems and basic interaction with Linux servers via the command line.
  • Knowledge of Agile practices and experience maintaining reporting solutions and data pipelines in an agile environment.
  • Comfortable in working with both new and legacy systems.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to present complex information effectively.
  • Attention to detail and commitment to data accuracy.
  • Spoken and written English, with a commitment to learn French.

Eligibility criteria:

  • You are a national of a CERN Member or Associate Member State.
  • By the application deadline, you have a maximum of two years of professional experience since graduation in Computer Science (or a related field) and your highest educational qualification is either a Bachelor's or Master's degree.
  • You have never had a CERN fellow or graduate contract before.
  • Applicants without University degree are not eligible.
  • Applicants with a PhD are not eligible.

About us

At CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, physicists and engineers are probing the fundamental structure of the universe. Using the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments, they study the basic constituents of matter - fundamental particles that are made to collide together at close to the speed of light. The process gives physicists clues about how particles interact, and provides insights into the fundamental laws of nature. Find out more on http://home.cern.

Diversity has been an integral part of CERN's mission since its foundation and is an established value of the Organization. Employing a diverse workforce is central to our success.
