At CERN, the European Organisation for Nuclear Research, physicists and engineers are probing the fundamental structure of the universe. Using the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments, they study the basic constituents of matter - fundamental particles that are made to collide together at close to the speed of light. The process gives physicists clues about how particles interact, and provides insights into the fundamental laws of nature.
Introduction
Are you a self-motivated communications professional with experience in scientific communication for a wide range of audiences - from policymakers to students and educators (at all levels), as well as the general public? Would you like to join the team responsible for sharing the excitement of CMS technologies, activities, collaborative work, and physics with the outside world? Are you skilled at producing simplified scientific materials across a variety of media (social media, videos, printed documents, web pages, etc.) and in organizing communication events around the world? Take part!
The CMS Experiment is one of the four large experiments at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC). Operational for more than 15 years, the CMS detector is one of the most advanced and complex scientific instruments ever created. Amongst many extraordinary results, CMS announced the discovery of the Higgs boson in 2012 and has since made ultra-precise measurements of its behaviour, leading to a better understanding of the universe. CMS is actively searching for “new physics” and will soon undergo a series of extensive and ground-breaking upgrades to then operate until the early 2040s. Sharing the achievements and technologies, as well as the collaborative nature of the work, is one of the fundamental tenets of CMS - and of CERN in general.
As Communications Support Officer, you will join a small team of communication professionals and physicists, taking a leading role in the strategic direction and implementation of CMS external communications activities. You will work closely with the highest levels of CMS management, while also interfacing with CERN’s central communications team and other LHC-related communications groups.
