Mission and objectives

UNESCO's founding mission, which was shaped by the events of World War II, is to advance peace, sustainable development and human rights by facilitating collaboration and dialogue among nations.[It pursues this objective through five major programme areas: education, natural sciences, social/human sciences, culture and communication/information. UNESCO sponsors projects that improve literacy, provide technical training and education, advance science, protect independent media and press freedom, preserve regional and cultural history, and promote cultural diversity. UNESCO assists in the translation and dissemination of world literature, helps establish and secure World Heritage Sites of cultural and natural importance, works to bridge the worldwide digital divide, and creates inclusive knowledge societies through information and communication. UNESCO has launched several initiatives and global movements, such as Education For All.

Context

The Tech Volunteers for Resilience (Tech4R) programme mobilizes skilled digital volunteers to co-create open-source tools that strengthen disaster resilience and support inclusive learning. This assignment focuses on the Gamified and Simulation-Based Safety Trainings for Children project, implemented by Tech4R in collaboration with UNESCO Ukraine, to develop an interactive mobile learning platform that helps children aged 10–16 safely navigate emergencies such as air raids, shelling, and unexploded ordnance (UXO). The app includes two learning modes: • A gamified module where children make calm, interactive decisions in simulated real-life scenarios. • A non-gamified AR simulation mode designed for younger or neurodiverse learners who benefit from slow-paced, observation-based visual experiences. The Visual Design & Animation Volunteers will create visuals, icons, and animations for both learning modes, ensuring all graphics are calming, inclusive, and psychologically safe for children

Task Description

Under the direct supervision of the Office of ICPSD The Volunteer will work to: - Develop and adapt visual concepts, icons, and user interface assets for the gamified and AR simulation modes. - Produce simple, slow-paced animations illustrating safe actions (e.g., sheltering, evacuation, identifying hazards). - Ensure all designs are emotionally neutral, non-traumatic, and supportive of psychological safety principles. - Collaborate with child education and psychological safety teams to review visuals for appropriateness. - Prepare assets in scalable formats compatible with mobile platforms and offline operation. - Support documentation of design guidelines for future localization or replication. This is an unpaid volunteer assignment.
