Background/Context
UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security. UN Women in Georgia supports state and non-state partners towards the achievement of substantive gender equality in Georgia. In line with national and international commitments, UN Women works on the levels of policy and legislation, institutions and grassroots, in order to achieve transformative results for increased gender equality and greater protection of the rights of women and girls. UN Women puts special emphasis on the work towards gender mainstreaming in good governance reforms and enhancing women’s political participation, ending violence against women, promoting and supporting women’s economic empowerment, and Women, Peace and Security agenda. Along with these key priority areas that constitute UN Women’s mandate, UN Women interventions in Georgia are anchored in the United Nations Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework (UNSDCF) for the years 2021-2025 with the government of Georgia.
Within the framework of its Women’s Leadership and Participation portfolio, UN Women is implementing “Women’s Increased Leadership for Democracy in Georgia” (WILD) project. The project is generously supported by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation and aims to promote women’s leadership and advance gender equality as key drivers for democracy and inclusive development in Georgia. Within the framework of the WILD project, UN Women, will be launching the Leadership Academy—a flagship initiative dedicated to cultivating and inspiring a new generation of leaders committed to the values of gender equality, women’s empowerment, and social justice. The Academy will welcome both women and men from a wide range of sectors—government, civil society, academia, the private sector, and beyond—grounded in the conviction that feminist leadership is inherently inclusive and transformative. Through a carefully designed curriculum, participants will gain knowledge, skills, and practical tools to champion women’s leadership and advance gender equality in their respective fields and communities, ensuring impact across diverse sectors and all walks of life.
Bringing together a distinguished roster of national and international experts, the Academy will offer a dynamic mix of interactive training modules, peer-to-peer exchanges, and mentoring opportunities enabling participants to draw from both global as well as local best practices and experiences. By equipping participants with the skills, knowledge and confidence to embed gender equality principles within institutions, policies, and everyday practices, the Academy aspires to cultivate a generation of transformative leaders capable of driving systemic change and building more inclusive, just, accountable, and resilient societies where the rights of women and girls are fully realized.
