Expected duration
Interns are sought for a six-month internship period. The internship is UNPAID and full-time. Interns work five days per week (40 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the Office.
Duties and Responsibilities
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global Environment. Its mandate is to coordinate the development of environmental policy consensus by keeping the global environment under review and bringing emerging issues to the attention of governments and the international community for action. The UNEP Latin America and the Caribbean Office (LACO), located in Panama City, Panama works closely with the 33 countries of the region and its activities are integrated into the Medium-Term Strategy and the Programme of Work approved by the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA). The Zero Waste in the Caribbean Project is a European Union (EU) Action programme financed by the 11th European Development Fund on Circular Economy and Solid Waste Management. This initiative seeks to improve the resource efficiency of Caribbean economies. UNEP’s support focuses on knowledge and policy engagement components strengthening national strategic and legislative frameworks and facilitating sub-regional and Caribbean wide action. The Caribbean Region contends with numerous waste management challenges, including a lack of strategic, legal, and regulatory frameworks in addition to limited infrastructure. While an action plan has been developed to encourage sustainable waste management practices, progress remains hindered by financial constraints and limited opportunities. The geographic scope of this initiative includes the Caribbean Forum (CARIFORUM) Member States (Antigua and Barbuda, The Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Cuba, Dominica, Dominican Republic, Grenada, Guyana, Haiti, Jamaica, St. Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Suriname, Trinidad and Tobago). Other partners of this programme include the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit GmbH (GIZ) and the Agence Francaise de Developpment (AFD) in collaboration with the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS), focusing on piloting technical interventions in selected countries. Under the direct supervision of the Project Coordinator of The Zero Waste Project, the intern will be supporting Zero Waste in the Caribbean Project.More specifically, the job will entail the following tasks: • Assist in the development of project documents/concept notes in line with needs and priorities of Project target countries; • Conduct research, assessments and surveys on related topics to inform project development; • Carry out research, analysis and drafting of documents presenting data and information gathered from diverse sources to support the implementation of the Zero Waste in the Caribbean Project. • Support the preparation of briefings, information material and power point presentations. • Support project implementation by gathering relevant information and data. • Assist in the preparation of relevant documentation and presentations for meetings, workshops and office events. • Assist in planning, organizing and reporting on meetings, conferences and workshops. • Provide support in maintaining the database of Stakeholders. • Provide any other programme support as well as administrative assistance to the Zero Waste Project team as and when necessary.
Qualifications/special skills
Applicants must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements: a. Be enrolled in a Master's Degree programme in Communication and Public awareness, International Relations, Social Sciences or related field.; OR b. Be enrolled in the final academic year of a Bachelor degree program Communication and Public awareness, International Relations, Social Sciences or related field.; OR c. Have graduated with a university degree in Communication and Public awareness, International Relations, Social Sciences or related field - Be computer literate in standard software applications (MS Office). - Have demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; - Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views..
Languages
For this internship, fluency in oral and writing English is required. Knowledge of Spanish or another UN official language is desirable.

Interns are not financially remunerated by the United Nations. Costs and arrangements for travel, visas, accommodation and living expenses are the responsibility of interns or their sponsoring institutions. Interns who are not citizens or permanent residents of the country where the internship is undertaken, may be required to obtain the appropriate visa and work/employment authorization.
