Purpose

Are you looking for an exciting opportunity at the heart of an ambitious fusion energy project? Join our Nuclear Safety Engineering Section, within the Engineering Service Department (ESD) as a Nuclear Engineer.

As a Nuclear Engineer, your goals will include:

  • Defining, propagating, coordinating and overseeing the implementation of radiation protection provisions for the scope of activity as per the regulatory requirements.
  • Ensuring that input data used for safety and radiation protection is properly integrated into the design, construction, and operation of ITER site facilities. Ensuring deliverables are produced according to project schedule and budget, within a quality-assured environment that requires rigor and a systematic way of working.
  • Developing, under the leadership of your discipline manager, your skills and experience for the benefit of the Project.

The ESD provides the required skilled engineering resources or services, which are necessary for the successful completion of the ITER Project.

The Nuclear Safety Engineering section supports different IO entities requiring nuclear safety expertise.

Being a member of the Nuclear Safety Engineering Section, you will have the opportunity to share and develop your expertise with other colleagues working in the same discipline on different ITER units.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Acts as Nuclear Engineer for radiation protection across a variety of systems/activities/teams.
  • Oversees the implementation of nuclear and radiation safety principles across various ITER activities that may expose personnel to ionizing radiation, especially during construction and radiography testing.
  • Manages the safety provisions associated with the use of ionizing sources and radiographic equipment on ITER site.
  • Develops and provides nuclear safety analyses, including radiation protection analyses and documentation needed to fulfill regulatory requirements (technical prescriptions, radiation protection files….).
  • Performs, or checks the safety calculations needed for specific licensing files related to radiation protection, radioactive releases or radiological consequences.

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Monitors the planning, execution and integration of activities in response to the requirements and commitments of the French regulatory bodies (Nuclear Safety Authority and Labor Inspector) related to radiation protection (including radiographic testing during construction activities, ALARA and maintenance)
  • Performs surveillance of safety related components and systems, ensuring correct application of the French Nuclear Facility order for the design, manufacturing, construction, installation, commissioning or operation of specific systems.

Experience & Competencies

Essential:

  • Proven experience in a radiation protection role, preferably within nuclear facilities (design, commissioning, construction, radiography testing, operation)
  • Nuclear and Radiation Safety: Radiation protection (knowledge of applicable regulations, knowledge or background in commissioning or operations of radiation protection components and systems for nuclear facilities, management of radiographic testing activities).
  • Performing calculations in the domains of radiation protection, radioactive releases, radiological consequences.
  • Continuous Improvement: proposing changes to processes and systems to enhance efficiency, quality, and productivity over time.
  • Quality Management Systems (QMS): apply the applicable procedures related to your field of activity.

Desirable:

  • Building partnerships and working collaboratively with others to meet shared objectives, preferably in an international environment.
  • Writing & Presentation: Experience of writing/reviewing technical documents in the domain of expertise, notably documents for the regulator, documenting and transmitting technical knowledge/data with clarity and precision.
  • Organizational Savvy: maneuvering comfortably through complex policy, process, and people related organizational dynamics.
  • Optimizes Work Processes: knowing or identifying the most effective and efficient processes to get things done, with a focus on continuous improvement.

Qualifications

Essential:

  • Master’s degree or equivalent in safety, nuclear safety or radiation protection field or other relevant discipline.
  • The required education degree(s) may be substituted by extensive professional experience involving similar work responsibilities and/or additional training certificates in relevant domains.

  • Knowledge of these competencies may be acquired through on-board training at basic understanding level for all ITER staff members;
  • Implements the technical control of the Protection Important Activities, as well as their propagation to the entire supply chain;
  • May be requested to perform other duties in support of the project as defined by your line manager, and when relevant upon the request of the matrix manager;
  • May be requested to work outside the ITER Organization reference working hours, including nights, weekends and public holidays, due to business needs - this may include on-call, shift work, etc.
  • May be requested to be part of any of the project/construction teams and to perform other duties in support of the project;
  • For staff expected to perform on-call, shift hours, or other work outside ITER Organization reference working hours, including nights, weekends, and public holidays, the possession of a driving license valid in France is required. no commuting vehicle will be provided by the ITER Organization.
  • Informs management of any important and urgent issues that cannot be handled by line or matrix management and that may jeopardize the achievement of the Project’s objectives;
