Job description

The “Infrastructures for Dialogue” (I4D) programme of theCivil Peace Service (CPS) in Ethiopia supports civil society actors in developing participatory and inclusive dialogue structures. The CPS further strengthens the organisational capacities of civil society organisations (CSOs) while encouraging network-building for collaboration and collective action. The aim of the CPS in Ethiopia is to contribute to the peaceful coexistence of social groups that negotiate their interests constructively and non-violently and are supported by a well-established civil society that acts as a trustworthy partner or social structure, legitimately representing and advocating for all members of society.

Your tasks

  • Provide advice and process facilitation to civil society partner organisations in planning and implementing participatory, inclusive and effective dialogue projects with the target groups;
  • Support CSOs in their organisational development (including strengthening their structures, processes and strategies) with a focus on peacebuilding projects in a restrictive civil society space;
  • Technical advice and capacity development of partner organisations in areas of dialogue, conflict transformation and conflict sensitivity, and collaborative and adaptive learning, including conducting workshops and trainings in non-violent conflict transformation methods;
  • Develop and execute context-relevant strategies for organisational development in order to improve the effectiveness of peacebuilding projects of partners;
  • Develop and update context, conflict and actor analyses, including Reflecting on Peace Practice (RPP), and facilitating organisational and adaptive learning processes;
  • Support programmeplanning and team processes as part of a pool of experts at programme level;

Your profile

  • Master's degree in peace and conflict studies, social/regional/political sciences, staff and organisational development, or comparable academic training; Knowledge of organisational development in the context of non-violent conflict transformation, civil society, human rights, and advocacy is an advantage;
  • Practical experience and expertise in violence prevention and non-violent conflict transformation from a civil society perspective;
  • Understanding of and experience with conflict dynamics and complex political and cultural processes;
  • Strong knowledge and experience in conflict-sensitive methods for project implementation, in particular Do No Harm and “Reflecting on Peace Practice” (RPP);
  • Demonstrated experience in working with civil society organisations to strengthen their operational and strategic capacities;
  • Good training and facilitation skills, with experience in coaching and participatory adult learning methods and the ability to engage diverse audiences and stakeholders;
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with experience in conducting organisational assessments and developing strategic plans;
  • High intercultural sensitivity and a willingness to approach new situations and ways of thinking with openness and respect;
  • Strong competence in team and process-oriented work;
  • Great flexibility, resilience and frustration tolerance;
  • Willingness to travel to the project regions for several days;
  • Business fluent in English;
  • Willingness to learn a basic vocabulary in Amharic or Oromo languages is an advantage.

  • Climate: Warm, pleasant climate and cool during the rainy season (altitude approx. 2400 m above sea level);
  • Health care: Generally adequate to good medical care;
  • Shopping and supply options: All daily necessities are available, including international products;
  • Accessibility: Good international connections via the airport. Daily direct flights to Germany (including Frankfurt), other European cities, and the African continent;
  • School situation and school fees: Good kindergarten and school situation (German and international). School fees are paid in accordance with the GIZ guidelines for development workers;
  • Security: Addis Ababa is generally a safe location; however, acquisitive crime is on the rise.
