This position is located in the regional political-operational structure of the Departments of Political and Peacebuilding Affairs and Peace Operations, Europe and Central Asia Division. Working under supervision of the Team leader, the incumbent will report to the Director and Deputy Director of the Division.
Responsibilities
Within delegated authority, the Political Affairs Officer will be responsible for the following duties: • Conducts research and analysis on peace and security issues related to the South Caucasus. • Maintains up-to-date knowledge of events relating to political issues, in general, and in particular as they affect the South Caucasus and the wider region. • Supports the activities of the United Nations Representative to the Geneva International Discussions through the provision of technical and substantive backup assistance • Monitors national and regional political developments and provides advice to the Director and Deputy Director. • Drafts reports, meeting notes, code cables, briefing notes, talking points for senior UN officials, internal memoranda, and other communications on issues under his/her purview. • Participates in provision of secretariat services to Security Council, General Assembly, subsidiary organizations, negotiating bodies, conferences, meetings, and /or special missions. • Represents the team at round tables, seminars and conferences. • Monitors actions taken with regard to the South Caucasus by intergovernmental groups, UN organisations, government and non-governmental organizations and maintains contacts with them. • Performs other duties as required

Education
Advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in political science, international relations, international law or other related field. A first-level university degree in combination with two years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Work Experience
A minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in political science, international relations, law, disarmament, security, development management, conflict resolution or related areas is required. At least two years of experience, at the international level, in conducting political analysis and drafting analytical reports and briefs is required. At least one year of experience working on peace and security issues covered by the Division is required. Experience performing functions as a desk officer in an international or regional organization is required. Experience working on South Caucasus is desirable. Experience in project development and management is desirable.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in English (both oral and written) is required. Knowledge of Russian is desirable. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is an advantage.
Assessment
Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by a competency-based interview.
