The Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) is a non-profit, bipartisan public policy organization established in 1962 to provide strategic insights and practical policy solutions to decisionmakers concerned with global security and prosperity. Over the years, it has grown to be one of the largest organizations of its kind, with a staff of some 200 employees, including more than 120 analysts working to address the changing dynamics of international security across the globe.

CSIS seeks an intern to support the Project on Nuclear Issues (PONI) with research efforts on a range of nuclear issues, as well as outreach and communication efforts. Interns support the operational and substantive goals of PONI and will contribute to initiatives to develop the next generation of nuclear experts. The PONI intern will provide research on deterrence, arms control, and disarmament and support PONI programming and events. They will also help maintain the Next Generation Nuclear Network website, help manage PONI’s external communications and social media accounts, and provide general administrative support to the team. Interns have the opportunity to produce an independent research product for the Next Generation Nuclear Network website. 

Because of the fast-paced work environment, interns should be motivated self-starters that enjoy a wide variety of research, analytic, and logistics work. The intern will be paid an hourly rate between $17.00-$19.00 based on qualifications and skillset. Please note this is an in-person and full-time position.



Essential functions and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to the following:

• Provide research support to PONI staff for ongoing projects on deterrence, arms control, disarmament, and other nuclear weapons policy issues.

• Support events related to various research projects.

• Develop programming for PONI’s Conference Series and Mid-Career Cadre.

• Compile the Nuclear Policy News mailing three times a week.

• Support PONI’s outreach efforts, including drafting content for social media.

• Produce an independent research product for the Next Generation Nuclear Network blog.


• Must be at least a college junior in good standing, a graduate student, or a recent graduate.

• Must be eligible to work in the United States.

• Strong analytic and writing skills.

• Interest and knowledge of issues related to nuclear weapons.

• Strong communication skills and social media proficiency.

• Ability to work independently and on a team.

• Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.

• Ability to manage competing priorities and multiple projects under tight deadlines.

• Must be available for an in-person and full-time (35 hours/week) work schedule.


The physical demands are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Performances of duties require the use of hands to finger, handle, or feel. The job frequently requires ability to stand, walk, sit, reach with hands and arms and talk or hear. Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
