Department Summary

Energy 4 Impact is Mercy Corps’ energy access platform, working to increase access to climate-smart, sustainable energy, improving the lives of millions of people around the world.

Consultancy summary

Energy 4 Impact produces a variety of articles, studies, working papers and thematic reports for external audiences, as well as programme reports for donors. Under the direction of the communications and the knowledge management teams, the proofreader will support Energy 4 Impact to ensure that content is clearly written, grammatically correct, consistent in formatting, error-free, and adheres to the house style guide when appropriate.

Consultant activities

The consultant will be engaged on a periodic project-by-project basis to improve assigned content according to the following criteria:

  • Identify and correct errors in spelling, grammar, syntax, punctuation and citations.

  • Cut, add or rewrite sentences where necessary to improve the clarity and readability of content in a style appropriate to the publication.

  • Ensure consistency of design, formatting, style and spelling within the document – and check against house style guidelines if requested by the communications team.

  • Check table of contents against section titles and page numbers.

  • Identify cases in which the information conveyed by graphics, tables or images seems incomplete, inadequately captioned or unclear.

  • Work to deadlines and raise any issues around scope or delivery in a timely fashion with the communications team.

Accountability

Reports Directly To: Head of Communications, Energy 4 Impact

Works Directly With: the communications and knowledge management teams.

Minimum qualifications and transferable skills

  • Proven use of writing and editing skills in a professional capacity.

  • Native or advanced command of the English language.

  • Excellent MS Word skills, particularly editing and reviewing tools.

  • An interest in and knowledge of the energy access and international development space.

  • Strong communication skills.

  • Meticulous attention to detail.

  • Organised with excellent time management skills.
