The International Monetary Fund (IMF), Resident Representative Office for Hong Kong SAR is seeking to hire an Economic Analyst. This role spans macro-financial analysis across Asia, with a particular focus on financial markets.

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) is an organization of 190 countries, working to foster global monetary cooperation, secure financial stability, facilitate international trade, promote high employment and sustainable economic growth, and reduce poverty around the world. The IMF Resident Representative Office in Hong Kong SAR supports the IMF’s work on financial market surveillance in Asia and is the primary channel of engagement with the Hong Kong SAR authorities and financial market participants in Asia.

The selected candidate will support the Office’s expanded role in financial market surveillance in Asia. This is a full-time local contractual position with an initial appointment term of one year, renewable. Hence, the candidate is expected to possess appropriate work permit for Hong Kong SAR without support from the IMF.

Key Responsibilities include:

  • Contributing to the IMF’s global monitoring of financial market developments, including drafting daily Asia-focused market updates and maintaining close contact with market participants
  • Monitoring and analyzing macro-financial developments and financial stability risks for major Asian economies and contributing to thematic notes.
  • Contributing to the analysis presented in the IMF’s flagship Global Financial Stability Report.
  • Developing and maintaining databases.
  • Participating on a selective basis in relevant conferences and meetings with government officials and financial market participants.
  • Supporting the IMF’s outreach activity in Hong Kong SAR.
  • Providing all other macro-financial surveillance support as directed by Resident Representative.

Job requirements

  • A master’s degree in finance, economics, or related fields. A bachelor’s degree together with strong work experience will be considered.
  • At least 2 years of relevant work experience in financial markets or macroeconomic analysis.
  • Strong analytical skill. Adept at conducting high-quality data analysis independently.
  • Strong writing skill. Ability to deliver concise, insightful written analysis under tight deadlines.
  • Excellent communication skill and ability to engage with colleagues across time zones. The IMF working language is English. Knowledge of Mandarin and/or other Asian languages would be an asset.
  • Self-starter with the ability to work autonomously. Strong teamwork mindset.
  • Strong proficiency in Excel and data management. Familiarity with econometric packages (EViews, MATLAB, Stata, Python, or similar) would be highly preferrable.
  • Experience with economic/financial databases and information services (e.g., Bloomberg, CEIC, Haver Analytics, WIND).
  • Knowledge of major Asian financial markets would be a great asset.
