Position Title: Communications Officer

Duty Station: Pemba, Mozambique

Classification: Professional Staff, Grade P1

Type of Appointment: Fixed term, one year with possibility of extension

Estimated Start Date: As soon as possible

Context:

Under the overall supervision of the Head of Programme Support Unit and the direct supervision of the Media and Communications Officer, the Communications Officer will be responsible for assisting in the development and implementation of specific communication and visual design outputs and activities that effectively convey IOM Mozambique key messages and enhance the organization's visibility, advocacy and community engagement efforts.

Core Functions / Responsibilities:

  1. Provide creative inputs for the development of compelling written and visual content for various communication channels, including press releases, articles, social media posts, infographics and designed materials, and multimedia materials.
  2. Support the management of IOM's social media accounts by posting approved updates and monitoring audience engagement and online discussions related to migration, development and humanitarian issues.
  3. Under close supervision, contribute inputs for the production of multimedia content, including photo and video documentation of IOM activities and events.
  4. Assist in updating and maintaining the organization's website, checking if content is accurate, up-to-date, and visually appealing. Bring issues to the prompt attention of the supervisor.
  5. Provide administrative and logistical support for the organization and promotion of events, workshops, and campaigns.
  6. Maintain an organized database of communication materials, photographs, and other media assets.
  7. Facilitate internal communication efforts within the organization by collecting and compiling information and other materials, as requested.
  8. Participate in supporting various units within the organization to help them identify communication needs.
  9. Draft specific segments of Pemba’s monthly report and the bi-monthly newsletter.
  10. Perform such other duties as may be assigned.

Required Qualifications and Experience:

Education

  • Master’s degree in Journalism, Mass Media Communications, Audiovisual Production or Public Information or a related field from an accredited academic institution; or,
  • University degree in the above fields with two years of relevant professional experience.

Experience

  • Work experience in communications and project implementation;
  • Experience in international journalism, including coverage of international organizations work and dealing with local and international media;
  • Experience in using social media platforms for professional purposes; and,
  • Previous experience in communications, media, or public relations is an advantage.

Skills

  • Strong writing and editing skills, with the ability to convey complex information in a clear and concise manner;
  • Strong skills in photojournalism, and in photo and video production and editing;
  • Online communication and social media skills;
  • High level of professionalism and ability to work under pressure and adhere to strict deadlines in a complex and fast changing environment;
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple projects simultaneously within a multicultural team;
  • Basic knowledge of graphic design and multimedia software is desirable;
  • Knowledge of migration and humanitarian issues is a plus;
  • Exposure to IOM’s institutional setting and or other international organizations and familiarity with IOM branding guidelines is an advantage;
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to work independently; and,
  • Good communication and collaboration skills.

Languages

IOM’s official languages are English, French, and Spanish. All staff members are required to be fluent in one of the three languages.

For this position, fluency in English is required (oral and written). Working knowledge of Portuguese and/or any local languages spoken in Mozambique is an advantage.

Proficiency of language(s) required will be specifically evaluated during the selection process, which may include written and/or oral assessments.

Internationally recruited professional staff are required to be mobile.

This selection process may be used to staff similar positions in various duty stations. Recommended candidates endorsed by the Appointments and Postings Board will remain eligible to be appointed in a similar position for a period of 24 months.

Appointment will be subject to certification that the candidate is medically fit for appointment, accreditation, any residency or visa requirements, and background verification and security clearances. Subject to certain exemptions, vaccination against COVID-19 will in principle be required for individuals hired on or after 15 November 2021. This will be verified as part of the medical clearance process.
