Duties and Responsibilities
The Universal Postal Union (UPU) postal network spans 192 member countries. Its designated postal operators employ five million people, who deliver almost three hundred billion postal items each year. This global network is trusted to provide essential services to the most isolated of communities, using hundreds of thousands of post offices and vehicles, as well as an expanding digital infrastructure, and service portfolio. As the United Nations system works towards the achievement of the 2030 Agenda and its Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the UPU has drafted an ambitious roadmap for the 2021–2025 period, the “Abidjan Postal Strategy”, which was adopted by the 27th Congress in Abidjan in August 2021. As part of the approved work proposal for the Abidjan Strategy, this project will gather and update analytical data, examples, case studies and interviews of Postal social services. Providing enlightenment about service diversification through innovations of social services (e.g. health, education and social inclusion) is essential for the sustainability transformation of the postal sector in alignment with the UN SDGs. The main objective of the traineeship within the Sustainability Services Programme at the Sustainability and Financial Services Unit of the Directorate of Policy, Regulation and Markets is to further the understanding of the motivations for Posts to diversify into social services and offers practical advice for Posts and social development actors. Ultimately it would enhance the capacity of the postal sector in its sustainability transformation. This project provides a unique opportunity to be part of the workforce behind the UN specialized agency and contribute to its sustainability agenda. The suggested duration of the traineeship is 3 months initially. The Universal Postal Union (UPU) postal network spans 192 member countries.
