The Clinton Health Access Initiative, Inc. (CHAI) is a global health organization committed to our mission of saving lives and reducing the burden of disease in low-and middle-income countries. We work at the invitation of governments to support them and the private sector to create and sustain high-quality health systems.

CHAI was founded in 2002 in response to the HIV/AIDS epidemic with the goal of dramatically reducing the price of life-saving drugs and increasing access to these medicines in the countries with the highest burden of the disease. Over the following two decades, CHAI has expanded its focus. Today, along with HIV, we work in conjunction with our partners to prevent and treat infectious diseases such as COVID-19, malaria, tuberculosis, and hepatitis. Our work has also expanded into cancer, diabetes, hypertension, and other non-communicable diseases, and we work to accelerate the rollout of lifesaving vaccines, reduce maternal and child mortality, combat chronic malnutrition, and increase access to assistive technology. We are investing in horizontal approaches to strengthen health systems through programs in human resources for health, digital health, and health financing. With each new and innovative program, our strategy is grounded in maximizing sustainable impact at scale, ensuring that governments lead the solutions, that programs are designed to scale nationally, and learnings are shared globally.

Program Overview:

The CHAI China country team works in close collaboration with both local and global partners, including the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, to enhance access to high-quality, affordable health products in Low- and Middle-Income Countries (LMICs). To realize this objective, CHAI actively partners with an extensive network of stakeholders, including both public sector partners and Chinese suppliers.

The CHAI China team is now seeking a candidate who will be seconded to the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation China County Office, working on the Health, Innovation and Partnership (HIP) team.

  • The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation is a leading philanthropic foundation fighting poverty, disease, and inequity around the world. It was founded on a simple premise – people everywhere, regardless of identity or circumstances, should have the chance to live healthy, productive lives.
  • The HIP team of the foundation’s China Country Office focuses on optimizing the process of translating innovations into healthcare and related products (pharmaceuticals, vaccines, biologics, diagnostics, nutritional products, and vector control products, etc.) that can be accessible in LMICs. The hired candidate will assist the HIP team to manage relevant programs, portfolios and pipelines, as well as provide support for strategy review and partnership management.

Position Overview:

This candidate will be seconded fulltime to the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation China Country Office, working with its HIP team. The candidate will report directly to his/her supervising Program Officer at the foundation, and will be simultaneously managed and supported administratively by CHAI China. The candidate will work in close collaboration and consultation with the CHAI China team to utilize its technical and programmatic resources to execute their responsibilities.

The candidate will focus on supporting the foundation’s HIP team to engage promising supply-side innovators and companies from China across different program areas such as diagnostics, vaccines, malaria, and maternal, newborn and child health. Their primary responsibility will be to conduct global market analysis, apply strategy and plans for the development and implementation to projects that improve market access of high-quality essential health commodities in LMICs. Such projects involve close collaboration with various internal and external partners including the foundation’s Program Strategy Teams (PSTs), pharmaceutical industry, biotechnology companies, academic research institutions and governmental and non-governmental funders, Product Development Partners (PDPs) and other foundation partners. The assignment will also include supporting various grant management and project implementation activities. All activities require the ability to develop strategies and implement work plans, and the ability to work in close collaboration with multiple external partners and with internal colleagues to ensure the integration and coordination of their work with the foundation's overall global health strategy.

We are seeking a highly-motivated and entrepreneurial individual with outstanding analytical skills, problem-solving ability, communication skills and project management experience. The candidate must be able to function independently, be flexible, and have a strong commitment to excellence. Responsibilities

The candidate’s main responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Assist the foundation’s HIP team to design, develop and implement project activities as required by the partnership framework, work plan and budget;
  • Lead research to serve the identification and formation of specific projects, including disease context, technology platforms, global health interventions, regulatory pathway and product markets;
  • Conduct landscaping, stakeholder and company interviews, quantitative analysis, market research;
  • Prepare background papers, technical briefs, and high-quality strategic reports and presentations for engaging both internal teams and external stakeholders;
  • Organize meetings, workshops and seminars;
  • Develop methodologies including tools, processes, key performance/success indicators that are highly relevant and appropriate for analyses, project management and goal fulfillment;
  • Provide strategic recommendations for development of new programs, project management, communication and process improvement;
  • Project/grant management, including reviewing inquiries, grant proposals and reports, regular check in with grantee, and technical supports on problem solving, etc;
  • Other responsibilities as needed.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in business, economics, public health, political sciences, or in a related field
  • 3-5 years of work experience in management consulting, international organizations, strategy functions in the healthcare industry, investment banking and/or similar functions
  • Fluent in both English and Mandarin Chinese (speaking, reading, and writing in a professional setting)
  • Proficient in MS Excel, PowerPoint and Word
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills
  • Experience with market research
  • Project/grant management and stakeholder relationship management experience in public and private sector settings
  • Ability to work independently without extensive structural or operational support
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously in high-pressure situations and a fast-paced, multicultural environment
  • Ability to achieve maximum efficiency and impact with limited human and financial resources
  • Available for at least 20% travel

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in the healthcare industry (e.g., healthcare consulting, clinical trials, drug manufacturing, regulatory issues, supply chain, global health, or commercial drug development)
  • Experience with strategy development or product development of biomedicine
  • Experience working and living in low-income countries or resource-limited settings
