Position Title: Managing Director, Major and Principal Gifts

Reports to: Chief Development Officer

Location: U.S. Remote, preference for major market

Travel: 20% travel requirement, domestic and international

Employment Type: Full-Time

Position Overview:

The Managing Director (MD) is a key leader of the Development team who leads a high-achieving, 20-member Major and Principal Giving Team that raises more than $150 million annually and is part of an integrated 100+ member Resource Generation Branch (RGB) that supports a $230 million annual operating budget, allowing Partners In Health (PIH) to operate more than 300 medical facilities in 11 countries with more than 18,000 staff.

Responsibilities:

Team Management & Support (55%)

  • Leads a talented team of geographically diverse frontline fundraisers and support staff responsible for raising more than half of the institution’s unrestricted funding, as well as restricted gifts, from individual donors and family foundations.
  • Deploys fundraising best practices, defines priorities for the major and principal gifts team, and optimizes operational efficiency, maintaining a coordinated, inspired, and high-functioning team.
  • Conducts in-person cultivation and solicitation meetings, and supports executive and Board interactions with top donors, prospects, and connectors.

Strategy Development (25%)

  • Develops and implements fundraising strategies to meet annual and long-range goals focused on donors making outright five- to seven-figure gifts.
  • Collaborates with the Senior Director of Consequential Gifts, CDO, CEO and other members of the Consequential Donors group to devise and execute strategies for attracting the institution’s largest gifts.
  • Uses available data and analysis to optimize fundraising and engagement strategies with a focus on portfolio management, acquisition, and stewardship of both new and existing donors.
  • Collaborates with staff and leadership in the RGB and across the institution to build relationships and promote deep integration, strategic alignment, and a strong culture of philanthropy across the RGB and broader organization.

Integration across Resource Generation Branch (20%)

  • Serves as a member of the Development Leadership Team and collaborates with a senior team of other RGB managers including the leads of Institutional Partnerships and Marketing & Communications departments.
  • Contributes to cross-branch planning, strategic development, and integration efforts, led by the Principal, Chief Advancement and Communications Officer.

Qualifications:

The ideal candidate will have the following personal and professional skills, qualities, and competencies:

  • Bachelor’s degree (master’s degree and/or fundraising certification preferred) or equivalent field experience.
  • Twelve or more years of experience in nonprofit fundraising with progressive levels of responsibility and leadership in a major fundraising campaign.
  • Five or more years of staff management experience, preferably with at least five direct reports, with a strong record of providing strategic and operational leadership, including creating and managing a budget.
  • Leadership stature and strategic ability to be a thought partner to the Chief Development Officer and other senior RGB leaders; A forward thinker driven by innovation in developing philanthropic best practices who works collaboratively with senior-level colleagues, board members, and other high-level volunteer leaders on successful development-related activities.
  • Successful track record of personally cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding major gifts from current and prospective major and principal gift donors including individual and institutional donors at the level of six to seven-figures or greater.
  • Demonstrated analytical and organizational skills in evaluating existing programs, conceiving, and implementing new donor programs or strategies, and resolving operational and interpersonal issues. Able to analyze data as well as knowledge of fundraising software and proficiency in the Microsoft Office suite.
  • Exemplary interpersonal skills: ability to collaborate effectively with culturally diverse staff across departments and country and to drive change by inspiring trust, inclusion, and creativity.
  • Able to travel domestically and internationally, including international travel to remote or hard-to-access locations with limited infrastructure. International experience in low- and medium-income countries is a plus.

Pay and Benefits:

The pay range for this position at commencement of employment is expected to be between $170,000 and $190,000/year. The starting salary offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, including market for the position, job-related knowledge, skills and experience.

Subject to the terms and conditions of the applicable plans then in effect, eligible employees may enroll in a 401(k) plan with employer match, as well as participate in organization-sponsored medical, dental, vision, short-term and long-term disability insurance, and basic life insurance plans for the employee and the employee’s eligible dependents. Full time employees will receive 15 days of vacation, 12 sick days, 3 personal days, and 3 volunteer days in addition to paid time off during the week between Christmas and New Year’s Day, the week of July 4th, and 11 additional holidays annually.
