2024 Graduate Internship Programme (Monetary and Economic Department)

The Bank for International Settlements (BIS) is looking for recent graduates to join the 2024 cohort of Graduate Interns. This is an 11-month internship that will allow you to use the knowledge you gained during your studies in a professional environment. By joining the graduate internship programme in the Monetary and Economic Department (MED) you will:

· have the opportunity to work in an international financial institution at the intersection of research and policy.

Purpose of the Internship Programme:

The programme is designed for recent graduates with no more than 12 months of overall full-time professional experience in a related field, aiming to enrich your work experience for a higher educational degree or a position at another organisation. The MED undertakes policy research and analysis relevant to central banks, including innovation, monetary and financial stability. It also organises and provides research to key meetings of senior officials in central banks and financial authorities. Depending on your skillset and experience, you will be assigned to one of the Statistics and Research Support units within MED.

Programme duration: 11 months

Programme location: Basel, Switzerland

Programme start date: October 2024

Principal accountabilities:

· In close collaboration with analysts, data scientists and economists, contribute to the BIS’s publications and meeting materials.

· Create graphs and tables for use in publications and at key meetings on global financial topics.

· Maintain databases for internal and external use and provide solutions to issues related to large data sets, firm-level data and BIS statistics.

· Conduct data quality control and help test and implement new statistical applications.

· Support economic research and analysis by collecting, processing and conducting statistical and econometric analysis of data from a wide range of sources.

· Create, maintain and automate data pipelines.

· Implement interactive dashboards to explore and disseminate economic data.

Qualifications, skills, and experience:

· Bachelor’s or master’s degree in a relevant field (e.g. Economics, Statistics, Computer Science etc.) completed in 2023 or 2024

· Strong analytical skills

· Data management, processing and visualisation skills

· Programming skills in standard statistical packages (MATLAB, Stata, EViews) and/or other data management tools (Python, R, SQL)

· Familiarity with various data sources would be an advantage (DataStream, Bloomberg, etc)

· Passion for new technologies

What we offer:

The contract is for up to 11 months (non-renewable). This is a paid internship, and we cover health insurance, support with relocation and return travel, as well as accommodation in Basel.
