CSIS seeks one full-time, virtual or in-person social media and outreach intern to support the International Security Program (ISP). ISP focuses on global security challenges and the United States Department of Defense.This person will be responsible for drafting daily social media content for the International Security Program social media channels to include Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn. In addition, they will assist in coordinating online/in-person events, and drafting external mailings, including a monthly newsletter.

The intern will support the ISP outreach team which is responsible for drafting content for all of ISP and its subprograms: Transnational Threats Project, Defense-Industrial Initiatives Group, Project on Nuclear Issues, Smart Women, Smart Power Initiative, Missile Defense Project, Project on Fragility and Mobility, and Aerospace Security Project. The intern should have experience working with graphic platforms including Canva and should have an interest in expanding their social media and public relations skills. The intern is a self-motivated, independent, creative thinker who can juggle multiple responsibilities while working as part of the overall ISP team. This internship is paid hourly.


Essential functions may include, but are not limited to the following:

• Manage the International Security Program (ISP) social media accounts (including Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, and Instagram).
• Create interactive online content such as videos and social media graphics. Knowledge of Canva and Wavve or other online graphic design tools is a plus.
• Assist with the organization and management of events, including writing promotional language, creating and sending invitations, and updating mailing lists.
• Assist with the production of the ISP monthly newsletter.
• Track and log media (print, broadcast, and web) appearances by ISP scholars.
• Track weekly and monthly statistics on ISP podcasts.
• Draft individual social media and public outreach plans for all of the ISP subprograms.
• Assist in the creation of the annual outreach presentation for senior scholars.
• Work closely with the External Relations team to ensure that ISP content is regularly included in Center-wide publicity.


• Must be at least a college junior in good standing, an advanced student or recent graduate
• Must be eligible to work in the United States
• Must be able to work full-time (35 hours a week)
• Strong written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills
• Social media proficiency
• Interest in defense and security issues, international relations, and foreign policy
• Self-starter with the ability to work independently but also collaboratively with a team


Performances of duties require the use of hands and fingers to handle or feel. The job frequently requires ability to stand, walk, sit, reach with hands and arms and talk or hear. Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus..
