Senior Director, Infectious Diseases Division

icddr,b (formerly the International Centre for Diarrhoeal Disease Research, Bangladesh) has a long tradition of outstanding research, and benefits from the ability to bring molecular science to address human disease, both in community-based and clinic-based research.

Reporting directly to the Executive Director, the Senior Director of Infectious Diseases Division is a seasoned and strategic executive with an international reputation for excellence in the biomedical sciences. The position will be responsible for leading and effectively managing a team of research staff to guide and implement a thematic transformative research agenda which currently encompasses enteric and respiratory infections, emerging infectious diseases, vaccinology, and HIV/AIDS.S/he will be expected to ensure translation of research to influence national and global policies, achievement of excellence in priority research areas, provision of services that leverage research, and development of relevant institutional capacities. Working closely with other Senior Division Directors, s/he will develop a cutting edge program of research that takes advantage of the synergies presented by icddr,b’ssuperb field sites, clinical facilities, and laboratories.

The position will be based at icddr,b’s research centre headquarters in Dhaka, Bangladesh.

Roles and Responsibilities :

  • Provides strategic direction for the research activities of the Infectious Diseases Division
  • Generates research grants.
  • Ensures that the research of the Infectious Diseases Division is internationally competitive and supported byexternal funding.
  • Creates and leverages professional networks to partner with national/global institutions for collaborative working.
  • Provides oversight of the administrative and fiscal operation of the Infectious Diseases Division.
  • Builds consensus and resolves conflict.
  • Provides mentorship for educational and career development of the Division staff.
  • Determines appropriate selection of emerging technologies and information systems.

Required Qualifications and Experience :

  • Doctorate in relevant scientific discipline.
  • Strong publication record, including in Infectious Diseases.
  • International stature as demonstrated by election to relevant professional societies and service on international technical groups.
  • Minimum of 15 years’ experience in the role of a Research Director
