Job Title: Interim Senior Director of Finance

Reports to: Executive Director

Organizational Profile

Zanmi Lasante (ZL) is a Haitian organization based in Cange, Central Plateau, and Artibonite with administrative offices in Santo, Port-au-Prince. ZL is a well-known not-for-profit organization, the mission of which is to provide a preferential option to the poor in healthcare. ZL works closely with its sister organization Partners In Health (PIH), based in Boston, United States, to bring the benefits of modern medical science to those most in need of them and to serve as an antidote to despair. PIH delivers clinical services, training and research programs in 11 countries (Haiti, Peru, Russia, Rwanda, Lesotho, Malawi, Liberia, Sierra Leone, Mexico, Kazakhstan, Navajo Nation) and has a growing number of affiliated organizations and initiatives in many other countries such as Nepal, Burundi, Mali, Guatemala and Togo.

Job Description Overview

The Interim Senior Director of Finance will serve as a key member of Zanmi Lasante’s Senior Leadership Team and act as an advisor alongside other Senior Directors to the Interim Executive Director on organizational strategy and issues. The Interim Senior Director of Finance has ultimate responsibility for the overall financial management of Zanmi Lasante and oversees all accounting, budgeting, reporting, and compliance functions. This position is also responsible for ensuring that policies and systems are put in place that will demonstrate effective organizational financial stewardship as well as adherence to local regulatory obligations, accounting standards, and donor regulations.

This position ensures that the Senior Leadership team receives valuable internal reports and analyses that support informed financial decision-making. In addition, the role is responsible for building and developing a team that is well trained and equipped to manage the essential day-to-day accounting and finance functions, while also making continuous process improvements. Responsibilities include:

Organizational Strategy and Vision

  • Collaborate with the Senior Leadership Team to advise on long-term strategy for the organization and ensure its translation into multi-year budgets
  • Work closely with the Interim Executive Director to drive financial strategy for ZL in pursuit of organizational priorities and financial goals

Accounting and financial reporting

  • Support the development of systems that ensure adherence to strong financial processes, internal controls, and all relevant local laws and regulations
  • Manage the Director of Finance and Accounting, supporting an on-time monthly close process that includes the recordation of all financial transactions in the accounting system as well as regular reconciliation of all balance sheet accounts
  • Prepare for and execute an annual organizational audit of Zanmi Lasante
  • Manager the Director of Grant Finance and Compliance, ensuring timely and accurate donor financial reporting that is in compliance with all rules and regulations
  • Monitor organizational cash flows as well as oversee external financial and banking relationships

Budgeting

  • Lead the annual financial budgeting process in line with organizational strategy and priorities and ensure that the budget is kept up to date throughout the year
  • Provide regular updates and key information on the organization’s financial status to the Senior Leadership Team
  • Maintain strategic review of spending patterns and costs analyses of project expenditures
  • Support the team in conducting monthly, quarterly and mid-year budget reviews with all relevant managers
  • Oversee the creation of systems and processes to better support budget development for specific funding opportunities

Systems and capacity improvement

  • Conduct an audit of all finance and accounting systems in use, identify areas for improvements, and develop and execute an implementation plan focused on closing any gaps
  • Develop and implement standardized accounting and functionality
  • Drive continuous process improvements that strengthen ZL’s control environment and enhance financial efficiencies
  • Expand and strengthen the overall capacity of ZL finance team ensuring that all staff have the training and tools they need to successfully do their job

Skills and Qualifications:

Essential:

  • BA/BS in Accounting or Finance, or other relevant field
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience working as part of finance team, 5 years of experience managing a finance team
  • Demonstrated experience in or knowledge of nonprofit accounting, including fund and grant accounting, compliance, and reporting
  • Proven track record of overseeing organizational audits
  • Strong written/verbal communication
  • Excellent analytical, organizational, and problem-solving abilities
  • Willingness to travel to remote parts of the district with limited degree of infrastructure development
  • Exemplary interpersonal skills; ability to collaborate effectively with culturally diverse staff across departments and country
  • Willingness to live and work full-time in a rural setting
  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality, meet deadlines and schedules, set priorities, and work with detailed information/data
  • Ability to work well in a dynamic team environment alongside health workers, senior management team, support staff, and patients

Desirable:

  • Masters in Business Administration and/or Certified Public Accountant (or other equivalent) preferred
  • Experience with an international non-profit/NGO
  • Experience in internal audit or in testing the design and implementation of internal controls
  • Experience with Serenic Navigator accounting system
  • Strong sense of humor and an easy-going attitude is an asset
  • Interest in social justice strongly desirable
