Our team and mission

The Ground Systems Engineering and Innovation Department is responsible for all the ground systems engineering and support activities required to support mission operations and implement innovation.

The Department maintains and manages a full level of competences, technologies and services in all engineering disciplines related to ground systems, infrastructure, technology evolution and Engineering R&T and innovation.

The Department provides expert support in these areas to the Directorate of Operations for all current and potential missions and leads, in the role of architect, ground systems evolution and innovation implementation in the infrastructure.

The Department is furthermore responsible for the overall technical standardisation coordination for the ground segment, in particular in the Management Council of the Consultative Committee for Space Data Systems (CCSDS).

The Department is relying on the following domains of expertise:

Field(s) of activity/research for the traineeship

Depending on your interest and skills the focus of the training will be on advanced software technologies in:

  • Artificial Intelligence
  • Cyber Security
  • Model Based System Engineering
  • Augmented and Virtual Reality
  • Robotics simulation/ monitoring and control
  • Embedded software systems in the context of CubeSats.

The exact details of the work will depend on the missions or projects available and your specific interests and skills. It may include any task in the software development life-cycle, from requirements definition to operations support. This provides an excellent opportunity to learn about the specification, design, implementation, testing, transition to operations, and management of complex software systems and their underlying software infrastructure. The training may also provide the opportunity of exposure to real spacecraft operations. The work will be performed under the supervision of an experienced Data Systems Manager.

1) topic 1: Mission Planning and/or Mission Automation System:

Complex software systems used by the flight control team for planning in advance operations on the spacecraft and the ground segment and for the automation of operational tasks. This may include optimisation of the use of resources either on-board (e.g. memory, downlink bandwidth, power) or on ground (e.g. ground station passes, network lines to the control centre).

2) topic 2: Operational Simulator and Digital Twins:

Complex software systems used to simulate the behavior of the spacecraft and ground equipment used for testing of the ground segment and training of the flight control team as well as integration with operational simulators of other agencies (e.g. in the context of the planned international collaboration in the Moon/Mars programmes). This topic also covers activities related to ongoing cutting-edge work for utilization of spacecraft Digital Twins for space operations.

3) topic 3: Service Provision Data Centre:

Complex software system that orchestrates the collection, processing, management and distribution of data to the user community by means of software services.
