The Role

This position is responsible for managing and processing the UK and Expatriate payroll portfolio of Mercy Corps Europe on a monthly basis.

Essential Job Responsibilities


  • Deliver complete end to end of monthly payroll from start to finish, using SAGE50 Payroll software for approximately 145 employees, inclusive of expatriates. This includes, but is not limited to, starters, leavers, changes, benefit deductions and variable payments, whilst ensuring all adjustments are calculated accurately, documented and supported by appropriate approvals.
  • Process all salary payments using the Sage Salary Payments module
  • Manage and resolve any queries from employees relating to payroll
  • Manage year-end reconciliation and statutory year-end returns processes. Ie. P60’s and P11D processes
  • Manage and administer monthly pension contributions
  • Produce monthly payroll reports for use of the accounts department
  • Support all internal and external audits related to payroll, in compliance with GDPR
  • Keep up to date with new/changes in legislation which impact payroll
  • Ensure RTI and auto-enrolment regulations & requirements are adhered to
  • Manage Mercy Corps Europe’s online government gateway account, raising queries of any outstanding balances or credits as appropriate
  • Maintenance of payroll records
  • Update payroll guide document as processes changes


Reports Directly To: HQ Finance Officer

Accountability to Participants and Stakeholders

Mercy Corps team members are expected to support all efforts toward accountability, specifically to our program participants, community partners, other stakeholders, and to international standards guiding international relief and development work. We are committed to actively engaging communities as equal partners in the design, monitoring and evaluation of our field projects.

Minimum Qualifications and Transferable Skills

  • In depth knowledge and recent experience of working with Sage50 payroll is essential
  • Minimum 2 year of professional experience in a fast-paced office environment, with emphasis on payroll administration
  • Excellent computer skills required, including very good / advanced Excel knowledge
  • Overseas, international, non-profit experience in organization of a similar size and/or interest preferred as are candidates with a healthy sense of humor.
  • Ability to work independently with little supervision is essential
  • Ability to work to tight deadlines
  • Experience of calculated enhanced family leave
  • Processing of employee benefits, including salary sacrifice
  • Experience in processing expatriate salaries would be an advantage
  • Knowledge of the legal aspects of UK payroll and pensions: PAYE; NI calculations; SSP; SMP and other regulations
  • Sound knowledge of GDPR
  • Multi-tasking, organizational, and prioritization skills
  • Excellent spoken and written English.
